Can anyone help me with this Tachometer. Got lucky at our annual swap meet and scored a NEW Stewart Warner Electric Tachometer. Right face style to match the 60s SW gauges in the A coupe and the RPM is adequate for the nailhead. This will look great hanging under the dash in one of my billet steel brackets. The vendor told me that it was intended for install in a 68 Cougar many years ago but never made it and had spent the intervening years on the shelf in his garage. We all know that vendors never fabricate stories like that. The only problem is that I don't know what it is for and what the wiring configuration should be. The back has one wire from the light bulb, a ground lug and 2 terminals with no markings, also holding the mounting clamp on. The back is crimped on with the trim around the dial. The tach and box are marked with " D755J K4 " and " BW224 " in a circle. The attached photos show the back and face of the tach. Any help or leads to someone that can help is greatly appreciated. Canuck
One of the terminals is dist and the other is ignition, but thats the easy part... Hang tight I will put 15 of my best fingers on it
Just googled and waa laa, all you gotta do is e-mail them for the diagram: http://www.stewartwarner.com/Tech/faq1.html
E-mail sent to Customer Service. Hope they are willing and able to help. If anyone knows anything about this please do not wait for SW to reply, that may never happen. Thanks guys, keep the info coming. Canuck
Now that I know how old the tach is, I just have to find what kind of engine a " D755J " tach is for and how to wire it. Sure hope it isn't a diesel! Sure will look sweet in the A if I can get it to work. Don't have a finished picture, but this is the layout of the dash insert I made. Used full size scanned pics of the gauges to finalize the layout before drilling the holes for the gauges. Tach will hang on a custom made bracket under the dash by the door with room for a switch, maybe headlights. Made to clear the emergenc brake lever. Thanks for the help guys. Canuck
Click on the tachometer link at this page. They have a wiring diagram that may help. http://www.raylinrestoration.com/TechIndex.htm
Thanks for the help BigJim. The description of terminals on the tach sure agree with the diagram.. You sure didn't make my day when they mention a sending unit. Looks like I will have to track down what model of sending unit is required. The search continues. Canuck
I have had luck with Speed-O-Meter Service in Milwaukee WI 414-463-6660. They sent me a sending unit and several pages of literature...Hope it helps
Found all the data on the sender required as well as testing and repair procedures for the tach and sender. Thanks guys
