Okay my question is I have a Hurst Shifter and the handle is hitting my seat when I go to 2 and 4th. It has two rivits that look like they are holding the handle in place. HAs anyone ever drilled these out and changed the handle. I have the bracket that centers the shifter in the car. Just wondering if anyone has ever done this. Thanks for any help
Don't know what shifter you have but hurst actually sells different handles, so just for bench seats. If I recall the last Hurst shifter I had the handle was actually bolted.
I don't know about that shifter in particular but there is no reason than you can't hack it off and weld on something that will work... I run a th350 in my 27 T. I'm using a cheap *** mr gasket universal shifter that I got off ebay for 10 bucks.. I hacked off the stock handle and welded on a 1/2 rod shaped like an old swan stick... I'm sure you can do something similar...
my hurst handle was welded to the part that went in the shifter mechanism. the welds were chromed and it appeared factory. I have seen some hurst handles that unbolt. I just cut my handle off about 3 inches abouve the shifter mechanism and am going to make a new one with a boltable connection. This will also make it easier to get the body off the frame with out having to remove that shifter mess.
My Roadrunner has a Hurst with a bench combo. I had the same problem since the rubber grommet around the base was almost nonexistent. I know at least on my car ( which also has the pins) all you have to do is slide something down between the base of the shifter and the grommet to release a tab holding the pin in place. Once you get the shifter out you will see that there is a metal piece that sits between the grommet and the shifter. Mine were trashed and wouldn't even keep the shifter from coming out mid shift. So I opted to drill and install bolts. One reason being I couldn't find the grommet and clips without having Hurst rebuild the whole unit. Hope this helps.
Thanks last night I looked at it and it looks like it has little tabs on each side that are holding it in place. I will try to pull those out and drill new holes tonight. THanks all for the help
