finally met a neighbor tonight,he lives about 2 blocks over, has a '47 Mercury that i've seen parked, but never with him around. i'm out front this evening working on my brother's Hudson when he wanders by and says howdy, and we get talking. he has a '50 Mercury in the garage getting a front clip and 4 wheel disc, and a '57 chevy up in Oregon he needs to pick up and bring down here. i know where he lives.i've seen the '47 in his driveway.i never see him out in the garage.i've been living here for a little over 2 years now,and never met the guy before. he's never met the guy building the Model A hot rod down the street. he doesn't even know Floyd, who tears around the neighborhood on his Triumph,or Ranchero,or whatever (Floyd has a lot of cars) all the time, which is how i met him. i pop the garage door open all the time when the weather is nice, and always make time to talk about cars if someone stops by. maybe that's why i never seem to get anything done?
Yea, seems like people don't open up as much here in the City. NOt many, not any I should say car folks in my little townhouse complex. There is a guy building a wooden canoe, which is kinda cool and brave at the same time. I go shoot the shit with Fred the canoe guy sometimes, but yea I wish people would come by more and check my shit out.
i wish there was some one's shit that i could check out i swear there is nothing around my way but i guess that why im on the hamb
Whereabouts are you in Sydney Aedan? There's plenty of clubs all over the place and a few HAMBers that live around Sydney (me included obviously). Do you go to any shows/runs/cruises etc? There's one out in Wetherill Park this Monday (ANZAC Day) at the Victoria Tavern. There's also a bunch of Aussies at the Rodder's Round Table and it even has a super secret 'Aussies Only' section. But you need to know the secret handshake to get in. Getting back to the point... Hey yorg... maybe people are too scared to open their doors these days in fear of people casing the place. Kinda sucks, but it sure would suck more if you had some stranger come in and then you get rolled the next time you're away.
lol i live in hurstville i dont get to many shows or anything coz my parents arent in to cars at all which sucks
I'm the lone ranger round here! We are getting new neighbors this Friday. I keep dreaming that he'll have some sort of old hotrod...........knock, knock, knock "Can Jeff come out and play." ....of course my wife will say, "He's not allowed to play with you."
I like neighbor visits - but they can become too frequent! It's about to get hot down here...and I'll have to open up my garage just to breath. I have a neighbor who stops by every time i have the garage door open and I can't get anything done. He is a blacksmith and metal artist and we have alot to talk about....but he has no social skills whatsoever. I had a work weekend planned with my dad and he interupted and spent half a day in our way. Eddie ( BellM) came by to give me his 2 cents on my frame progress and neighbor guy shows up and interupts our visit....Allen ( smittyshotrods) can testify too . I may have to invest in air-conditioning to enjoy my shop and my friends.
I'll be opening my garage soon. Got about 1/2 dozen plans for the Elk. I'm new in my area (been there since Oct.) I've had a couple people compliment my car when I had it open before. My neighbor across the street has a bone stock 29 Ford tudor and we've chatted a couple times. I just noticed the other day another neighbor has a gray primered 53 Stude sittin' in his backyard about a block away. Could possibly be another new car buddy of mine.
I work with the garage door open. There is a couple about my age mid-30's. The gal was backing out and told the guy, man check out that old car. I didn't hear him say anything. I think she said it loud enough so I could hear. She's invited over anytime!!!
I can throw a baseball from my front yard and hit Detroit's Woodward Avenue. It's not so hard for me to find car guys in my neighborhood. It's like living in Mecca and trying to find some other religious folks.
In my neighbor hood if you open the garage door you run the risk of the neighbors checkin' your stuff out. A good tool box will bring darned near 45 dollars at the pawn shop. I work with mine open when the weather is good, I got a big dawg. Thinks the tool box is his.
i'm gonna leave my garage door closed , not that i'm unfreindly....it's that i don't want the wrong people to know what's going on in there...the same reason i have everything under cover..out of sight, out of mind true ,an open garage door and/or projects cars in the driveway is an invitation to meet some great people...annd some assholes who want your stuff too i used to have an old gas pump along side my garage, got ride of it when people would stop and ask about it and what else do i have?
I generally lay the ground work w/ new "friends" as: Hey, thanks for stopping by. Give a call if you'd like to come by again some time. My boys can stop by any time. They know that w/ my wife it's kind of like swinging by your buddy's place who has a Pit Bull. Yeah, you're going to see home boy...but you could also get your damn head torn off. Getting a sign soon that says 'Beware of Wife.'
I gotta live in one of the worst Chicago 'burbs for car people, and it's gotten worse since the invasion of the cell phone-chatting, latte-and-Lexus McMansionites. There's a smattering of Harleys, a few stock muscle cars and some sports cars. 20,000 people and only 3 freakin' hot rods (including mine). I was working with the garage door open the other day and the neighbor lady sez "oh, what a cute little dune buggy."
Leaving the garage door open brings the code enforcement nazi out. They usually want to talk about cars too, like: "Why do you have a non-operationla vehicle on your property?" or "How soon can you get the non-operational vehicle towed away?"
When I saw the title of this post I thought you were talking to me, Yorg! Haven't been out there much lately...
Man, I always end up with some old guy walking by the house, telling me what aunt or uncle owned one "just like it", and they wanna talk FOREVER about it, wanna know what I've done to it, why it doesn't have hubcaps, what's with the skull, how come I don't have a 500, how come I don't restore it.. blah blah blah. I jus wanna friggin drive it. Go fast, have fun, and enjoy it.
I've been ripped off too many times to be friendly. Your sitiuation sounds a little different 'cause these are at least your neighbors, but I'm real sceptical about any old schmo asking what's in my garage.
Mines usually open. It's a 2 car garage with 2 68 satellites in it. A four door and a 2 door. In the driveway is my 54 chevy truck, minivan, & camaro. A realtor neighbor drove by the other day and said "why don't you sell one of your cars?" I said "which one do you want to buy?" Asshole. About an hour later another guy stops and says "Hey man I'm not a weirdo but I noticed you had a couple of plymouths" He has a 65 sport fury. Nice guy. I also have a couple of kids in the neighborhood who drive fart pipe cars that really give them hell when they drive by and I'm home. Whatever.
