I was trying to get some input on any modification that people have done to their 49-51 Mercury's. I know there is millions of mods people do, but thought I would see what fellow hamb'rs are doing. Pictures would be great too. Thanks
go here and do some research. i would look at all the stuff from the 50's http://public.fotki.com/Rikster/
"To Chop, or Not To Chop", that is the single biggest question about what modifications to make. My 51 Merc is chopped.
Only do what needs to be done, nothing more. There are always more modifications that can be done, but usually "more" ****s. Try to stay away from anything "radical" or "extreme" and you should be OK. Good luck, -Abone.
The ones that are the best are the ones that don't try to change the appearance away from it being recognized as a 49/51 Merc. Starting with Sam Barris's Merc and going right up the ladder over the years all of the great ones are he ones that have changes that individualize them but don't change them to the point that you don't recognize what they started as but that pretty well goes across the board for customs in general.
Shouldn't be hard to find out. A lot more people played with them that Hambers. I alway like the rounded hood corners for one. If your'e going to customize it.
get it running, do the brakes, get some new shoes, and of course a little lowering job. then you have a car you can enjoy and improve on as you go. when it comes to mods FIX ALL THE RUST FIRST!!! then do the fun stuff
shes nosed, decked, louvered, skirted ,lowered, has custom interior, lakes and spots, wide whites, shaved side trim etc etc you get the idea! Mild kustoms turn heads!
Your car is the inspiration for what i want for mine. I do not really want a chopped top all out custom. I think they are cl***y as hell with just the small stuff done.
you didn't say what kind of mods so... the one that's in the shop now is getting a ball joint front end conversion with power disc brakes and lowered rear springs. we're also doing a 12v conversion using a powergen unit and installing a pertronix in the distributor.
