just got a new converter , took it out of the box and noticed that it rattles if shaken, anybody got an idea, is it bad or is that normal?? its a 3500 , 10 in. thanks
it will rattle.i cant tell you exactly how many parts are inside but deff.more than one.the inner hub/plate is seperate from the outer houseing and thats prob.what you hear.
Maybe you are just pulling somebodys chain, but, do you mean a torque converter with a stall speed of 3500??
Changing them? No, not unusual. Calling them a "stall converter" yes. They are torque converters. Torque converters have stall speeds. Proper terminology helps. When I got on the board I saw people talking about stall converters. Turns out they were discussing what I had always known as torque converters. I think in most places they still are. Or, is Stahl a manufacturer of torque converters?? I really don't know.
Now that this is all behind us. As for the Torque convertor, yes I've had the same thing happen in the past. Once filled with fluid and installed, all was good.
all the hell i want to know if the damn thing is supposed to rattle.... call it what you want to and ill call it what i want....i need to send it back or put my TORQUE CONVERTER IN MY CAR THANKS FOR THE TERMINOLOGY AND SPELLING LESSON....
It's all good, pour it full of fluid and put it in the car. Always need to make sure of pump engagement depth prior to bolting it up to flex plate. BTW....stall speed is a product of how much power (torque) the engine makes. If you really want higher stall speed a custom built TC is required. An "off the shelf" TC may or may not give you a change. They (torque converters) are not a "one size fits all" kind of deal. Happy motoring !
thanks man, thats all i ask for...... unfortunately i dont have that kind of money i my be wasting what littlle i have..BUT ITS FUN
I think everyone knew what he was talking about! I did, even with the wrong spelling.A Little critical here aren't we?LOL(did ya think he was talking about a chain saw?) JimV
Have heard many people call them Stall Converters for many years, at least since the 70's. As in "Yeah, it's got a 427 with a stall converter, 4-11's and a posi". Now most gear heads understand what he means and it's a lot easier than saying "Yes Sir, My automobile has a four hundred and twenty-seven cubic inch big block Chevrolet engine with an automatic transmission that has been upgraded to a Higher RPM Stall Torque Converter and a rear end that has has a Four point one, one to one gear ratio ring and pinion with a limited slip differential" Typical conversation "You got a stall converter in that thing?" "yep 3500" But he did spell Stall wrong, Stahl is a header manufacturer
x2 on filling it up with red stuff first! When I first changed to a TCI 3500 off the shelf converter it wouldn't flash beyond 2800 for awhile. I took it out and womped it a few times and it now goes to 3400 easy. Like something loosend up. I'm running a 306 and a c-4. Good luck, I bet it goes together in less time than it took to get a straight answer on here today. YOU are a good sport!
Thats the first thing I thought when I saw this thread title. Anhewon hoo thinkz spelign dosant mater iz rong.
Lets call it "How to get chewed up on a website". Remember...this is an automotive website, not a college entrance exam! Questions are supposed to be asked, answered or discussed and not picked apart! Reminds me of those idiots running a local HOA (Home owners association)!
Don't let some a hole cod run your blood pressure up. Everyone knows what you are asking, some people are just full time ones. Yes the stall converter will rattle. I am sure you know to fill it with fluid prior to installation. Sorry for the repetition, He lit my fuse, and I responded before getting to the last reply. good luck,
Since this thread is 5 months old I'm sure its in by now. lit your fuse huh? Didn't read last reply or the date. Maybe just the urge to call somebody an a hole.
Just a tip from an old guy , Sometimes when installing a new convertor the spines are real snug on in it. You will find it easier to get it on the splines if you set the trans on its tail straight up and put it on that way . best of luck
