Hi I have a question to all 40 coupe owners, or just people that have restored them. I am looking for some detailed pictures if possible of the second back body mount below the A pillar. Im currently working on one that has been seriously hacked up by the person before me and Im tryin to make it right and its just one mess after another. Ive made some tools to reproduce so stamped pieces and then after makin some things I find Im a hair over sized because there ends up being more then I layer of sheetmetal welded over rust. One long section was FIVE layers thick. And one piece was like 11 gauge?? (Im currently tryin to decipher how to go about makin the inner rockers and body mounts) Very frustrating so I know they made the body mount in question and I want to re do and correct it. I can figure out the majority of the rest because they are cross members with enough clues. The only other questionable area is the third to last body mount at the corner of the front lower quarter. Heres some pictures of where I am hopefully some one can help me out and understand what Im lookin for. Thanks in advance, Joey
Very nice job you are doing there! I had to perform all the same repairs on mine way back in the beginning of the build. I used patch panels available from EMS and it worked out nice enough. Unfortunately, I don't have much in the way of photos of the area you are talking about and my body mounts were so far gone that there was nothing to photo anyway. I just fabbed up something to work, but was not very 'original' looking I'm sure.
Thanks Cleatus, Im sure most cars this area was gone. I was just hopin for that fat chance that just maybe someone had old photos or that rare super clean car. I have a few ideas I am just lokkin to see if I can find what it should be. And as far as EMS Im not all that impressed I bought rockers, quarter bottoms, and rear tail panel and trunk floor tool tray. I spent more time modifying them that I should have just made them. Thats why Im makin the lower cowl piece and everything else from here on out. Also bought some *****in lower cowl body mount pieces and again a waste. Way over sized and not worth it. But anyway gettin of the main topic here. Here is where I got to this after noon after cuttin out layers and layers of ****. As everything else the floors will be next even though already done they are ridiculous. (Also I side note of frustration, this car was "cut in and ready to paint" when I got it) And this is their body mount, its rough and can be nicer but I dont really like the idea over all.
I've got one, (for 40 years) and think I know what you're asking. That body mount, far as I recall, is simply a 90 degree thing that a rubber pad sits on and the body mounts to it. The floors are almost flat, so no big deal on how they go in. Are you streetrodding it? If so, the trans tunnel will probably have to be changed anyway and that will dictate how you do the floors. Looks like you're right on track with your work now. If you mount running boards, they will change the way it looks and probably won't matter how the rockers look, although yours look better than the stockers. cooger (doubt than any of this helps)
No big help, Thanks a lot. I just couldnt figure out why it would be thatsimple and out of place looking compared to every other mount. Also because it hangs below the bottom of the rocker a little. So I guess that Ill go with somethin like you described I was going to over complicate it with my ideas. And yes it is a "street rod" thats why no build thread. The floors fire wall and tunnel were *****in parts installed poorly by the owner so the tunnel is too low and the floors look like ****. I think I can leave the firewall alone. But the floor pans I will make look basically original with similar beads maybe just a little different and 16 gauge steel. Also it will have running boards and the rubber mats but I still like everything that gets hidden to be perfect. So thank you again for your input.
The other way screwed up one is still the body mount at the front of the quarter opening. That was a horrible mess and Im not quite sure where to start there other then that I cut all the **** out haha. Ill get some pictures of that today and post tonight.
thanks to guys who used our parts. to slammed 58 we have the lower front cowl. for body mounts it has been a few years since i looked under a 40 chev. but if you look in our catalog under 57/8 ford there are some real basic mounts out of heavy steel that could work p/n: 196 & 238 the 49 chevy section has some intresting mounts too. you should have our catalog since your using some of our stuff www.emssutomotive.com the ems guy
Well Im good on the front now but still not sure about the rear one I was talkin about I again have some Ideas just lookin for some input. Here are some pics of the specific area. (Note the nuts welded together!) Maybe I should just go that route. haha. And a shot of the rear pan patch I made quick still needs a little work but way better then whats there.
fyi: in late 1997 and early 1998 street rodder magazine had a article (over 3 issues) that covered repairing a 40 chev in this manner,
Thanks Ill check into it but I think I got a good grip on it now after tearing it all apart I could see some clues as to what I need to make. But I will search for that article just to check it out. Thanks again for your input.
