This weekend I made the flanges for my headers and got the one done minus the collector. The flanges were the hardest part. They're gonna get coated white when they're done. Cool? I like them! Clark
I like them. I've been looking at making something kind of similar as far as the pairing of the cylinders but bringing them outside the frams rails and also reminiscent of fenderwell headers.... I'm just waiting on the tubes I ordered to show up..
Those are bitchn!! I'm only countin two Ys, but I'm not complaining. What are your plans for the collector? Man, I love building headers...one of the funnest parts of building hot rods. Can I steal your idea for my Studebaker? -Abone.
Zman...watcha doin for flanges? JK...I spent about a half hour on the one head. After cutting myself on the one casting mark I got pissed off and got rid of it. A half hour later the head was smooth. I didn't do what the plug covers cover. FlamedAbone...the third Y is at the collector. I've got a 4 into 1 collector I'm going to beat on till it fits. I'll have more pics tomorrow. Sorry not my idea. I think they used to do it a lot in the 50's or 60's. If you're into maximum power you have to match the ports according to the firing order. I did have fun with them. Clark
The third "Y" is where the tails of the first two "Y"s come into the collector. Was there a performance reason for pairing the cylinders like you did, or was it cool looks? Other Nailhead Tri-Ys I've seen made the obvious pairings (both front, both back, then into one). They look GREAT--I've often thought that if I ever get off my ass and start actually working on hot rodding my '54 instead of just talking about it, Tri-Y headers would be the plan. Is it possible to have too much torque with a Nailhead?! -Brad
Brad...I guess I did make them the hard way. I just liked the looks this way. I hope I didn't screw up the performance with these. Of coarse with 1 1/2" into 2" pipes I can't see how it could be worse than stock manifolds. Clark
I'm running a 425 so my flanges were pretty easy to get. I bought a couple of sets a while back and had them setting here waiting....
Man, I think they look GREAT! I absolutely love the drilled flange. I agree--can't be worst than the stock manifolds! I'm going to run a set of stock '56 2.5-inch outlet manifolds on my '56 322 for a while, but I think at some point headers will be the order of the day. The torque of a Nailhead, with torquey Tri-y headers, and NW Speed's manifold spacers thrown into the mix! Mmmmmmmm......torque........grglgrglgrglgrglgrgl........ -Brad
Zman....lucky you! I've got at least 6 hours in the flanges. I measured several times to make sure everything was perfect. Clark
Clark- Six hours with plenty of interuptions! I see you changed my design from the up-swept dragster look. I guess yours look OK... should have put in a SBC.. ha ha ha.. Spike
looks good Clark, I'm thinking you did it right by splitting them the way you did, on this side anyway. if you had paired the number 1 and 3 cylinders together they would be firing consecutively and fighting each other for flow. while not perfect this separation should give some time between pulses, helping the scavenging effect. I think though that the other side should be paired 2-4 and 6-8 to break them up, if you pair them like you have here cylinders 4 and 8 will be consecutive in the same secondary. Paul
That will be difficult, the Stude center exhaust is siamesed so you only have 3 ports out of the head.
Man, that looks cool. Who does white header coating nowadays? I know (at least) one of those "almost chrome" ceramic coaters was offering it for a while, but seems I heard they quit doing white for lack of demand. If I ever get around to putting headers on my car, I'd like them to be white, but I haven't been impressed with the life expectancy of the parts store header paint.
Cool. I'll check with a couple local powder coaters and see. If they can't/won't, I'll be PM-ing you.
Slow down, jackass!!!! You're making me feel inadequate! More nice, tastefull fabrication from SOWHAT!... The 32 will rule.
What headers did you So-What guys use on that belly tanker you built? That thing was so cool. You guys do great work. You should build more belly tankers. Spike Sumo for MAYOR...
nice tubes brotha Clark. the story on smoothin the heads is funny cause last week i was putting the motor together for my daily driver (350 Chevy) and noticed a nasty looking casting line i was sure i'd cut myself on one day so i ground it off. next thing i know i've spent about 8 hours smoothing the block and heads. not "goldchainer" smooth but alot nicer than it was. it's a sicknes my friend, one you can't beat, so don't even try.
Great job Clark. I ran a set of tri-y's on a '62 Vette for quite a few years and then went to 4-in-1 "tuned " headers and the latter moved the power range up further and robbed the bottom end so that the car wasn't near as much fun to drive. Went back the other way. I don't remember the pairing except they were different side to side - as someone else mentioned. Charlie
Hey Clark, nobody told you we make em for 40.00pr. laser cut 3/8" plate. If you still need them give me a buzz.
What Guage steel did you use for the flange?? I have been looking for a way to get headers for my 56' Buick, and man those look bad ass.
