I call B.S. Triumphs are, and always have been, cool- way cooler than a 4 door Olds. The Olds is cool though... YEP!
Yep, You got a choice,, you can be happy with ALL OF YER WIFE, or half yer stuff ,,, Yer call... which ones the best ride? the triumph, or the wife.
Depends, the bike is cool and I would do the trade, but my wife also rides a bike so she would be cool with it. We use to fight about my cars, bikes, boats, and other toys but not anymore. I make sure to take care of the family, pay the bills, and give them nice things and in return they don't complain about my cars. I buy, sell, and trade at will!
I had a really nice sliding rag VW one time that some goldchainer offered me 12k for when I paid $6500 for it. the mrs was trippin talking about I love this car you cant sell it blah blah blah... a year and a half later she decides to buy a honda because she wanted AC and I couldnt give that car away... sometimes the ladies in our lives dont quite understand, we just have to calmly and rationally explain to them. and to all these people saying you gotta keep the car to keep her happy, what about its your car and you need to stay happy? do you have another car? I think you would stand to come out ahead finacially myself if the trump is in as good of shape mechanically as it looks. if you do get it go ahead and buy you some whitworth tools and get real aquainted with a manual for it your olds is cool bro but it still has 2 drs too many and a pre unit bobber is always sexy. buy a goldwing if the mrs wants to ride with you.
Do you know anything about bikes? Try to figure what they are both worth value wise. If you end up with the Triumph, ride it til' your kidneys hurt, then flip it. I've been out of the Triumph scene for a while but that bike would have brought 5500.00+ a few years ago....
Me - I'd try to find a way to have both . . . rather than end up with nothing if you know what I mean. That bike is very cool, but it doesn't do crap for your family and if that car makes her happy because of her Pops, the sentimental value alone might make your decision. I know how sentimental I am about things related to people I cared about. With all that said, that bike will go up in value a lot more than your Olds ever will - so it might be a great investment if you can swing a way to get it at a decent price.
I own a '69 Triumph Tiger TR6C. I love riding it, in-between the constant adjusting, tweeking, rain, and praying that the teenage girl next to me will stop texting. So in my opinion don't do it, unless I can interest you in a swap for a '69 Triumph Tiger TR6C. Straight Up. Seriously, keep the car.
I can't see how that Triumph is worth more $ than your Olds. I think (only my 2 cts.) you can ride all day in the olds, look good, be comfortable, and haul at least 3 or 4 more riders in pure comfort and real style. Your hardtop is a great looking car that will always look kool. I had one old Triumph and a Norton, they are always having some little problem that will leave you standing on the side of the road in the rain . I rode back in the 70's and it was dangerious then, today...no way would I ride a bike..too many drivers that are always multi-tasking and it will only take one clown talking or texting while eating and watching his GPS to run right over your ass. In the olds THEY will be the looser every time. BE SAFE-KEEP THE OLDS Bikes like that are a dime (maybe a little more) a dozen, Olds like yours WAY better, plus your wife will be much happier .
Well if those other two cars in your driveway are yours too, then TRADE! If not I would keep the olds, wife, and my life. I have a bike too and just got out of the Hospital a couple of months ago because some asshole didnt see me sitting at a red light! My wife hates the bike, hates it when i ride it too. You already said what you really want is an A, pass on the bike.
Stick with the Olds--used to ride Truimphs and Beezers to work in the 70's--people didn't see you then--had a few incidents--now it's worse with people driving while texting, on the cell phone, etc--make your wife happy and stay uninjured.
I agree with the above posters. The OP is in SoCal so the danger of riding a bike is far more dangerous than anywhere else. I've seen my share of accident scenes over there where a biker was involved and they were covering the rider with a sheet and this was before the days of yacking and texting.
Keep the car. I had a bar hopper bike similiar to that. It was fun but VERY impractical. Cruising alone is only fun for so long....
I've been married 31+years to a wife who is much smarter than me but knows squat about old cars & bikes and never gets involved in my constant car machinations. "the wife really does not want me to do the trade", is a lot different than the wife has my bag packed in case I do the trade. It wasn't her father's oldsmobile, just on the wish list. Personally, I'd go for the bike and if necessary throw the wife in the deal with the car (although I don't think this will be required as her objection is tepid at best).
I built my '69 trump from the ground up and was into it less than 4k and that was when there was a demand for old British Scooters. I'd keep the Olds and and find a bike to build.
i like the olds. i think the bike is cool but theyre only a certain amount of enjoyable and you cant enjoy it with your wife. the car is cool and something you can enjoy together. keep the car.
ok I hve ridden bikes for many many a mile, have owned countless makes and models..and at one point in my life they were my only form of transportation..winter spring summer and fall Keep the car women hate...messed up hair and makeup (helmit hair) women hate to be all soaking wet when you show up to the party women hate picking bugs out of thier teeth and sunglasses women hate only being able to take along with them what they can clutch in their own two hands or purse women hate to be cold, and wet..and sitting on a little seat for countless miles of rough road and no this is nothing against women..some of the nicest folks i know are women, and so is my wife and mother, but if you ask most of the ones i know..to be honest about it..up there is the truth..its only fun and romantic for a short while..it than goes down hill quickly
take it from a guy who has an old triumph, and a wife that wanted a classic family car. KEEP THE OLDS! the triumph isn't as reliable or comfortable, and the wife can't enjoy it, so she will resent it even more!! for what you can get into a decent triumph with a little work to do, you would be better off to save the cash up and buy one straight. then you also get the pride of it being YOUR handywork! KEEP THE OLDS! davey
***Attention all you guys with these old Triumphs that dont seem to want them much, PM me for my shipping address.**
What he said....When a Triumph stops leaking oil, it's out! But... I think I was way off on the Bobber values. There is one similiar on ePay right now with a dozen bids at $13,00.00 and reserve not met Then again there is also a nice mild custom mid 50's Olds hardtop at $20,000.00 with bids and reserve not met. I still say Keep The Olds... By the way...I see you are a pinstriper...why no striping on the Olds man that is one big beautiful canvas just waiting to be covered
That bike is only worth 5K tops and that's if you know how and what it was built with. It could be a bitsa, built from a bitsa dis an a bitsa dat. If that's the case it could cost another 3 K to get it to the point of reliable runner. IMO the car is worth more if you want a triumph just bold one yourself otherwise you could get stuck with someone elses nightmare. You can buy bikes like this for 3K all day long.
