they also used these in tanks in world war 2. and those parts are much cheaper to find than the caddy parts. if I was anywhere near the west coast, I would buy them!

hey, maybe someone coming to the detroit autorama from that area can bring them to me? :)

    Haha!

You're asking the wrong guy- I'm prejudiced!

Those engines weigh about 350lbs more than a Ford, but have 135 hp! Change the heads, and they are 150 hp, and 260 ft/lbs torque. Add a 2x2 intake, and dual exhaust, you'll be over 160 hp.

I guess that depends on who you ask.

I think they are way cool for a hotrod. You trade weight for horsepower, and not everyone has one! Ford guys will say the Ford flatheads are the way to go. It all depends on you.

Here are some threads with tons of info.

Did you pull the heads and take pics before the Dupont overhaul? If the cylinders and valves look good, that might be a helluva start on a hotrod mill!

My helper painted it before pulling the heads but I told him to go back and do that. Will have new pics in a couple of days. I wish I had a starter for it to see if it runs.

Paul, I've got a newley rebuilt starter, converted to 12 volt, sitting at dad's in Scammon Ks. I'll be back that way in 2-1/2 weeks. I'd be happy to ship it up to you to try and start the engine, if you'd like.

If the engine buyer wanted it, you could sell it to him, or ship it back when you are done.

Cad=346 cid. Ford=239 cid. There is no subs***ute for cubic inches. Except maybe lighter weight. Way cheaper parts. And Billions of hours spent on learning everything about hopping up Fords. Almost nothing on Cads. But they are cool and they are not making them anymore. Buy them and turn them. The price is very cheap.

BIG BIG problem with those engines, when new most got a chance to sit and idle in traffic, design flaw caused them to crack doing so. most i have seen are cracked between the valve seats very very common problem, when building one for my 46 60 series i had tore down 4 cores and all were cracked.most needed to be mag checked and not visible to the naked eye, BEWARE

Pats are expensive, and knowledge is hard to come by on them. Most of the knowledge I've found was here on this board. Cool engines though!
I have 3 now, finally got the valves pulled out of one and delivered it to the machine shop today to get tanked and magged. No obvious cracks in any of them, guess I'll have to wait and see about the areas between the valve seats.
Parts ARE available though. just gotta look harder. The only parts I haven't seen for sale are crankshafts and blocks. Got a line on some rods, haven't heard back on them yet.

shipping isn't bad, either. I've used enginesdirect out of phoenix to deliver all 3 of the flatcaddy's I bought, two of em cost me 218 bucks to get delivered, the last one cost 230. These were all complete engines that had to travel across multiple states to get to me. Not a bad price, in my book.

a musuem near me has a running model of the m5 stuart tank they display at local gunshows. I sure wish they'd swap me the heads off of theirs, it'd be nice to get the ones with the cadillac logo on em!

y'all have a good day, Keith

Keeper has a site with pretty cool parts for these- www.flatcaddy.com.

Here is a 4-71 blower intake that is being made, and some will be for sale soon.

    Well, Burrells are nice.....

  23. Is it a HAMBer making these intakes? Is there any more info.....I'm not sure what I really need to know though...."being made" and "for sale soon" pretty much tell the story.

The blowe mounting face sits relatively high....is that to clear stock exhaust manifolds?

It's interesting because a 3-carb manifold and a blower manifold were in my "one day I'll do that" list. I've still got a solidworks design I started about a year ago on my work PC here.

No, it's not a Hamber, just a Hot rodder. I believe the intakes will be around $650 or so. He's making me a 6-71 intake, for a future project.

Yes, the intake has to be high enough for the exhust. it won't look so 'tall', once the exhaust is on-I think!

Pretty cool, as it looks like he patterned the runners after the Burrell.

Typically a Ford guy, lately I've found interest in these caddy flatheads, and thought one would fit nicely in my '39 Poncho. Therefore, I'm subscribing to any thread on these engines. :)
