    Hey kids,
I haven't been an active member lately, but I used to post on the old HAMB. I have a '52 Chevy pickup that I'm trying to get together, and a few Lambrettas. I'm considering moving to Sacramento-Davis to complete my bachelor's degree. I'm a chef, and really interested in living near the wine valley and SF. I currently live in Chicago, and I can't finish my degree here. I figure CA would be a lot nicer than Madison WI which is my other option. Any thoughts on life in northern Cali? I like to hang out, meet folks...which are the car clubs that are cool, bars? Thanks for the info!! I just ordered a power brake booster and master cylinder for the pickup, it's about time it was drivable!!!

Go for it. There are more restaurants, wineries, cars than you can shake a stick at out here. The weather's right on the money, close enough to go skiing, the beach, SF, etc.

I like Sacramento. My firm is headquarted in Madison WI. I travel there pretty often. Sacramento is much better just because of the weather.

I grew up in SF & Oakland area for 32 years. This past year I just moved out of CA to Raleigh, NC. Culture shock for sure.

Honestly I personally never cared much for Sacramento, even though there always was a skateboarding and car scene there. It's about 2 hours from San Francisco driving, but the prices for living have been escalating. The heat in the summer sucks - but no humidity. It is close enough to other areas that are cool though. As others have said... you shouldn't have any problem having a good time there and meeting some cool people. Plenty of swap meets and shows.

I've lived in both areas. Grew up in Kenosha Wi and I've lived in Fresno since 1990. You'll never get me to move back. The valley sucks, but I love it too. It kinda grows on ya. Your never to far from anything. It's hotter by 10-15 degrees, but very low humidity. Besides once you hit 100 its hot dosen't matter if it's 103 or 108. Housing really took off in the last few years, used to be pretty reasonable except in a few towns. My house in Fresno was worth under 100,000 2 yrs ago. I now have a neighbor selling his for over 200,000. These are late 40's early 50's starter homes around 1,000 square feet. I'm sure Sac is worse so good luck with housing. I see it everyday on my job and the market is climbing slower, but still climbing. As far a car stuff your within driving distance to all the cool shows in the bay area, central coast(PASO) and of course SAC. Good luck and sell your snow shovel before you move.

    Thanks for the ideas, fellas.

Yeah, I'm going back to college at 30, decided that I'm not going to flip sautee pans for a living and expect to get anywhere. I kinda assumed that it's very expensive out there in Cali, but it's also really expensive here in Chicago too! My baby sister has a $1300 mortgage on a crappy townhome in the suburbs! I'll probably bug some of you guys with some more questions, but just wanted to say thanks!

So what are you wanting study? Maybe you should come to Paso in May and look around, we have a great growing wine country. Over 75 vineyard and counting. Cal Poly San Luis Obispo is just thirty miles away.

I'm returning to college to study Food Science, apparently a specialty field since they don't offer it in Chicago. I have another year of community college prereq's to go, and then I need to get in a good school to finish my bachelors'. I'll check out Cal Poly. I have another pastry chef friend who moved there to start an organic ice cream company. Wouldn't it be cool to be an ice cream scientist? Kick ass!
