The s-10 5 speed has about a 1/2" longer input shaft than a standard gm 3 or 4 speed. I have seen where the clutch disc is bottoming out on the splines or hitting the bearing retainer. Some guys cut the bearing retainer and others use a spacer between the trans and bell housing. Do a search, there is a lot of good info on hear about it.

A quick check loosen the 4 trans to bellhousing bolts and space the trans back with a couple washers and see if it will then work..If so look at front of input shaft in spline area and pilot bearing...

I did the same thing in my '40. I put an 1/8 thick washers as a temporary check to see if the clutch disc was in fact bottoming out on the splines. It was, so I am either going to make an 1/8" spacer and remove the washers or take the trans out and cut the splines back with a die grinder. I guess you could also machine/grind some of the hub of the clutch disc too.

i used an 11" astrovan clutch. the splines had to be ground slightly to get it to release.

thanks guys. I did get astro van clutch, and also considering cutting clutch hub and making splines longer. didn't think it was that much trouble to install t5.
