Alright...let me preface this with the statement that I really have NO idea at all how to approach converting my '52 Plymouth Cambridge from a 6 volt to a 12 volt. Really. So...with that out of the way, does anyone have any suggestions as to how I should go about doing this in the spring when the snow here in Saginaw, MI finally melts?? My reasoning for going to 12 volt is to have more cranking power for the flathead 6 as well as the ability to hide a stereo in the car. What parts need to be replaced? Where do I put resistors? Where am I going to run into problems?? Do I need to replace the fusebox? How much is this whole project really going to cost me? People have told me that it's an easy fix and should only take an afternoon. Personally, I think those people are full o' crap. They really have no idea how clueless I am with electrical work...especially on a car. Any suggestions / advice and / or help you guys can throw my way would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance, fellas! E
I have a 48 plymouth that I converted to 12 volt for the same reason. It is not that hard, but I am also pretty good at electrical stuff. I did make a new wiring diagram for the conversion though. Just take out the original generator and voltage regulator and replace it with a 12 volt alternator and new voltage regulator. I got the alternator and regulator from a 72 chevy pickup. Works great. You will have to change all the light bulbs and put a runtz style resistor in the power line going to the gas gauge. These are available from SPEEDWAY. Great people. Pretty easy to do. If you get confused, give us a holler.
...or you could just run 2-6 volt batts in series. 6V where you need it, and 12v where you want it... .
This will be probably an easy question for you guys that know wiring. But how do you convert a 12 volt generator to a 12 volt alternator ? My car already had the conversion done but for reliability of the charging system I am putting a Ford alt into the system and really need to know what to do with the three wires that were originally attached to the generator. Thanks in advance.
You might want to Google "6 to 12 volts" there is an excellent link to ebay that gives you all the details of the conversion in simple to understand terms, two thumbs up!
The first thing you should do is search this site. The subject of 6 to 12 has come up dozens of times.
