Some of the pins that hold my cars name plates to the fender are broken off and the plates are flapping around. I am worried they will break off or some punk will pop em off and I will never find a replacement. I have tried the 2 face tape the body shops use on newer cars and I tried JB Weld. Both attempts failed. Anybody have any ideas or suggestions?

  2. If you're going to use that tape you'd have to take off the remaining pins and go with tape only, and clean it well and make sure the back side is flat flush and smooth. Better to just take them off and replace them if you want to keep them.

Some times you can bend a piece of welding wire or a nail and grind out a cavity to lay it in with the point up like the original pin and use JB Weld to hold it in place. I have also drilled and tapped the remaining boss from the broken off pin for a #2-56 screw threaded the screw in, cut the head off and filed the remainder to fit. I put JB Weld on the threads and aroung the screw to hold it in also.

Why can't they just be riveted back on?

  5. I don't think most name tags were riveted on......they have pins on
the back that go thru holes in the body and have a springy type
"speed nut" clip to attach them, or sometimes are threaded with a
    small nut.

  6. They're called barrel clips.

windshield rope adhesive - what they use to install windshields on late models - remains sticky forever, never hardens

I've had good luck with this process. See example pics in the thread below.

Was the two sided tape you used the 3M name brand that has the red backing on it or the no name stuff that has white/green backing? If you used the white/green stuff it is not rated for outdoor use and won't work long. The red backed 3M stuff will hold an baby elephant to a rhino's *** at 70 mph.

  10. While this is quite possibly true (the stuff holds, but...), what, exactly, prompted you to test in just this manner??

    And do you have pics??

It was the red backing tape. Maybe I will give it another shot and see what happens. If not, I will try that windshield rope idea. Thanks for the ideas, gentlemen!
