Thanks a bunch coolbreeze1340. I will do this and hopefully it remedies the issue.

  2. The throttle shafts may be worn causing the vacuum leak. Check for play. When you accelerate you are hiding the vacuum leak with additional fuel.
    Replace your leaking ignition wires.

Rookie question: When I spray carb cleaner around the base and into the carb, the RPMs raise. Is this normal or is there something else wrong?

The RPMs increase because the spray momentarily fixes the vacuum leak by sealing it up at the source of the leak. This is normal. Now you know precisely where this particular leak is. Fix it. Then look for any additional leaks....:)

I am willing to bet your car will run a lot better after you get the vacuum leak at the base of the carburetor fixed and some good plug wires installed. Hopefully the carb leak is just a gasket and not the shaft.

Me too Domino...I spray carb cleaner in the carb while the engine is at idle and the RPMs raise. Sounds like its the shafts right? Thanks!

If you are spraying flammable carb cleaner into the carburetor while idling, you are in essence increasing the amount of fuel (same as revving it with your gas pedal), and it will of course increase the RPMs. Don't start overthinking this. Deal with one item at a time....:)

Great plug wires, I have a set on my car and my boat, I used the marine blue ones on my boat, lil less money then the 50's but made a difference in the way the boat runs. The 50's on my car really work. Just a suggestion for plug wires.
