There was a primer gray, hammered 51 Merc in The California Kid movie. It was shown briefly during a couple of scenes; The garage scene as well as a scene where the Sheriff interupts a teen couple partying in the Merc. Anyone know the car and what became of it? The chop retained the 51 rear window. (At the time), the rest of the body looked pretty much stock; tailights, side trim, etc. Nosed, skirts, door handles deep sixed. I'm guessing it was an LA area car, borrowed for the movie shoot. When the movie was made in '74, not many folks were building chopped Mercs. I wonder if it was a survivor rather than a newly chopped car? Where is it now?
That looks to be it (with a hokey grille) -great catch! I've never seen Badlands but here's a couple of pics. "Badlands" is 1973, while "The California Kid" is 1974. Anyone know the history of the Merc or what became of it?
I'm no Merc expert, but I think the pic of the Kid garage scene shows a 49 or 50. There's at least a 49-50 bumper on the front, and isn't that a 49-50 grille surround?
You're right, it does appear to have 49-50 front end components. The body is definately a 51 (quarters/rear window). A hammered Merc in two early 70's moviesa and then...?
