The crude petroleum doesn't wear out. The additives break down (plasticizers) and it gets soot from combustion. It's true, it is a better start than fresh crude.

I remember a service station in Sherman, Texas in 1973 that had a gas pump where you could pump rerefined oil for 10 cents a quart.

Oil comes out of the GROUND?!

Dad used to run reclaimed oil in the '51 Pontiac 8 because the car was thirsty and went through the good stuff too fast.

The lubricating properties aren't what I question...I want to know how they remove the acids from combustion. Maybe the oil goes through some kind of retort after filtering.

I've been on the board long enough to know that if the Highlander says a rooster will pull a freight train, then just gonna hook him up. But you have to admit, this recycled oil thing IS a bit counter-intuitive.

  10. Anybody know where I can get a good deal on an old De' Leval? What was the other one we used in the Navy? Oh yeah...Sharples. Heat it up, centrifuge the piss out of it (and the soot, and where products, and...) then adjust the chemistry. Highlander refresh my memory on paraffin in oil.

I agree. i work at a ford dealership and the bulk oil that we get and put in every car is a synthetic/recycled blend that seems to do just fine. i have been running it in my daily drivers for years. the only times i have seen a problem is when people leave it it for 10,000 plus miles, but no oil will hold up to that.

Now would i run it in my hot rod or drag car that has $5,000-10,000?
NO when you spent that much money on a motor you take care of it and run full synthetic. side note the valvolin vr1 race oil is good shit maynard

Funny all this talk about the good old days when gas , oil and girls were cheap.

All three are no longer cheap........ especially the last one ;)

As far as oil goes and used oil, as Highlander said, when they recycle it, the soot is removed, all the basis additives are built back up ( the plastisizers ).
Your engine won't know the difference if it was recycled and will love ya anyway.

Paraffin is a form of oil or a base stock to be closer to correct. Paraffin is used to create other products like wax but it's not a real wax in and of itself. I'm no chemist or oil expert. I've just done some diggimg around based on past interests and a lot of it stuck with me. Some of that would be that while most synthetic oils are great at reducing wear, some of them will rob a small amount of power. Synthetic's best claim to fame is the reduced burning at the rings, hence less soot and sludge build up. Most oils are a "package" that many manufacturers develop and sell. Most additives and suppliments are true "snake oil" products that only work as long as they're in the crankcase. Zmax and Slick50 come to mind. I tried Slick50 long ago. I was interested in the MPG claims. My car had an MPG setting and while that shit was in there I actually saw an increase of 3MPG in an 89 V6 Tbird. After the scheduled oil change I went right back to it's prior average. Their claims of "Teflon" and "50,000 miles" were false. Teflon needs to be applied at extreme heat to bond itself to metals. More than the heat of combustion. Their marketing was the slckest thing Slick50 had to offer. Zmax is the pretty close to the same thing. It's primary ingredient is either straight mineral oil or mineral spirits. It really does "soak in" to some metals, but it also will evaporate out. Again, as long as it's in there you might see a benefit.

I've also come to the conclusion that a "thinner" oil like 5W30 will get to more places in your engine than heavy oils will. A good thing. Those low pressures might nerve you up a tad but as long as it goes up under load you're OK. Standard OEM oil pressure at idle in a Packard straight 8, are you ready...10-15 on the gauge:eek::eek: Scary, huh? hell it may be less than that. I need more coffee.

I know, I know. You asked for the time and I built you a clock. Sorry...

  14. I can vouch for this, my motherinlaw used to live in LaConner!
As for the oil thing, check into the filter presses used to clean the stuff.
I worked in a chemical plant in high school, and we would get mineral spirits to make marine resin. We ran what looked like pure, clear mineral spirits through this huge filter press, and when we were through there was enough crud in the press you could shovel it out!
By the time this used oil gets filtered out there is nothing left but oil. Then the additives are reintroduced and all you've done is loose some of the volume you began with that went with the acids and metal and other debris, how much faith you have in it is a matter of perception.
