What care needs to be taken when removing valve cover and valves (top end)from 235? Want to inspect....
You do know that you have to pull the head to remove the valves, don't you? You don't just pop them out and have a look.
Valve cover removal is pretty straight forward. Inspecting the valves is another issue. Not quite sure what you want to do. To properly inspect the valves requires you to remove the cylinder head. Otherwise all you can do from "up top" is to adjust clearances. Judging from your basic question, it seems that you would be better if this was left to someone with more experience. Perhaps a knowledgeable friend or neighbor. Why is there any concern about the valves? Others will offer their advice. Perhaps most replies will help with better information.
Really all I want to do is look at the piston heads and as much as I can before I take it out and send it for a good cleaning. HAAA! I laugh in the face of experience! Seriously, thanks for the posts.
What is the "it" that you want to send out for a good cleaning, the head? Cleaning it will result in a clean head.......and little else. It sounds like you want to do a valve job. What makes you think this is necessary? Does the car run poorly? Why do you want to look at the piston heads? I certain they're still there. Seriously, if you don't have a lot of mechanical experience, get some help from some one who does.
From the way you're talking, this sounds like it's going to be one more engine that will never run again because it was dis***embled by a curious guy without the knowledge to put it back together again... think this through, unless you're ready to pay for a rebuild, there's very little to be gained from inspecting the valves and looking at the pistons...if this is a decent running engine, don't dive in over your head. If runs poorly, or not at all, nevermind, and carry on with the disection.
If your real keen to see the top of the slugs, you can (rent, borrow or buy) one of those flexible camera inspection things. They will fit down your plug hole just fine. But like the other guys said, Why? If your worried about a burnt or bad valve, a simple compression test or vaccuum guage will reveal all (In the hands of someone who knows how to use them).
Is the engine out of the car? It's pretty easy to get the head off of a 235 that's sitting on the ground. And It's a great way to gain experience. You might want to look up "Leak Down Test" It is something easy to do, that for some reason few do. It can be informative but works best on a warm engine. ?
LOL...First, Not smoking anything. Who knows if the motor runs...No money to send it anywhere right now, So I wanted to snoop around it without doing anything detrimental (thus, the questions..)some of you are right, I am inexperienced at this, but only one way I know to get experience... As far as I know the motor doesnt run and hasnt in years...But, thanks for the comments.
You would probably gain more experience trying to get the motor to turn over then just taking apart head without any knowledge. My two cents is to first see if you can get the motor to run
