Hey out there, you guys have been so helpful...but I have got nothing better to do since Winter is on the way but collect parts for my upcoming rebuild of a 54 full pressure 235 to replace knocking 216 in my 50 Chevy. I have some questions though, I have been told that the flywheel, clutch, starter, intake/exhaust manifolds (Fenton) are all interchangeable, but what about the fan and crank pulley. I got a motor, PG trans & rear-end for the right price, but was missing a few componets and I would like to see what I can swap and what I need to beg, buy and bid for on ebay. I have most of the parts for the 235 but am missing some critical ones, also where can I get a timing pointer for this motor?????? Thanks again for all the help!!
Been looking through the threads and I have not yet found one about possibly using the fan and crank pulley from the 216 for the 235 swap, the new motor has the short water pump, but the fan was removed, as was the crank pulley. Just want to find out what else might be interchangeable...thanks!
timing pointer is on the bell housing behind the starter an marks on flywheel. yes your starter an flywheel from 216 can be used on 235 make sure you dont mismatch those parts diffrent pitch teeth on those.a 216 intake will work on 235 with little machine work. good luck an hope this helps
Fan will work, pulleys not so sure, but I think so. The Fenton intake will fit, as will the exhaust manifold. And yes, the timing mark is on the flywheel, seen through a hole in the bell. If the '50 had the front mount you'll have to swap the 216 front plate to the 235, or adapt the 235 one to fit the car. I don't recall which old Chevys had side mounts and which were front mounted, they changed several times. The '54 had side mounts, I know.
216 fan is a low speed fan if u use it on a 235 it can fly apart an destroy lots of things it went through my inner fender on 53 chevy truck before i had got it just be careful cut down a 235 waterpump
If the block is a 54-55, the 216 water pump should be the same. There should be a slot hole at the top and 2 round holes underneath that behind the wate pump. Use the 235 fan and pulleys. The 216 flywheel, trans, starter should bolt up. I am doing this same thing for a 53 chev. pickup right now. Check patrick's for engine ID.
I made a pointer out of .063 steel and used the timing cover bolts to secure it to the engine. Then turned the engine by hand with the plugs removed to line the ball in the flywheel up with the pointer then took a sharp chisel and cut a grove for TDC at the new pointer on the balancer. It is much easier to see the new mark on the balancer than it is to see the ball in the flywheel with the engine running with my timing light. I also added a mark for 10 degrees advance to the balancer.
Your '50 engine should be running a 1/2 inch wide fan belt. If you use the 216 crank pulley, you'll have to run the '49-'52 water pump as well on the '54 engine.
OK, a wealth of info here...but I'm still lost, i have the waterpump for the 235 with the correct pully, but Do Not have the crank pulley. It seems that a 235 fan would be better, especially since the 216 fan is for lower speeds and could come apart. So the new dilema is if I need a 235 lower pulley, where oh where can I find one-except for ebay???? thanks
Up through 1954 the Chevy 6 has a 6 inch crank pulley and a 4-1/4 inch water pump pulley. That a 1.4 ratio, the fan spins faster than the crankshaft. 55 and up has a water pump pulley thats slightly larger than the crank pulley,so the fan spins slightly slower than the crankshaft. So a 55 and up engine fan actually spins slower than the 216 fan at the same engine RPM's,but a later 235 can rev a little higher,so..........
