Boy, you would think a professional custom shop would do a better job of cutting and welding! What a mess to fix!

    Hi Palle,
sorry I have not sent a copy of my poster. Good news. I have a new one with many!!! signatures from GNRS. I am going to send you one soon. Just saw your latest frame photos. Some suggestions. You can redo c-notch by t******* the lower insert to fit notch even on lower edges or just make new ones. I would then box the rail inside and out with same gauge steel. Weld solid and grind the welds. It will not be as strong as the original but should be ok. The right way to do it would be to actually fabricate c-notch plates maintaining the same height and cross section of the rail over the c-notch. One box plate on the inside and on the outside and upper and lower fillers of the same material complete the box. this way you will avoid the pinched area at the top of the box as it is now. . I would go back a 1' each way with the box plates. This type of work was done back in the fifties in driveways and garages all over the place. So it is not completely period incorrect. One other problem doing it this way is going to require some minor rework on the floor and inner wheelhouse. I would use rectangular box tube to fab crossmember and plate brackets for the shocks. The rest of the stuff looks like straight forward grind, weld and straighten as necessary to finish. Just be sure that the frame is dead nuts straight before and after the work. Ch***is black is pretty correct for time period. Rubberized undercoat on the floors and inner panels would probably look ok time wise. As usual just suggestions. If can clarify or help let me know. I have been pretty busy on the 41. I have pulled the drive train and am trying to get that sorted out before I pull the body. Hope all is well. Opinionated tinguy!! With help from Patticake's (typing).

I guess you don't like to read!
Most of the ch***is work was done by Jack and friends in the drive way with minimal tools!

    right.

anther thing to remember, at the time, these were not "rare" or hard to find cars. these cars were plentiful. no one thought that these cars would last this long.
customizing, lowering, sectioning, channeling etc., it was all a learning curve at the time.
these days we have the benefit of time, tools, networking, trail & error and hindsight.
and with all that information, tools etc that we have today, I have seen worse done recently.

thanks for your interest and comments! i just wanted to show you guys some history! just want to let everyone know, that most of the car was super nice. the frontend brakes etc was very nice done by Bob Drake..absolutely nice work. Bob bought the car in pieces and never had the body of the frame, so the cuts and bad stuff, is never seen until now! everything is just cool history....
and Paul!! thanks for all your suggestions, i will follow your advise as usual!
i will send you and email..
cant wait to see progress on your 41!
say hello to your lovely secretary ha ha!

well i finally found time to start working again. the spring started, and it kinda gave me more energy..
    so heres something!
i realized there where no reason for the C notch. the car is channeled and its probably from the time before that happened!
i fabricated new boxplates, and welded everything together. all done in 5mm steel.
after searching at all my friends part for 4-6 weeks, i started looking into my own pile of junk..at what did i find. the nicest 32 rearcross member you can imagine haha. and the damn thing almost fit.
so this is how it looks today..hopefully finished by the end of the week! next is the cadillac flathead engine ! cant wait!

    Palle, Great restoration!

When are you going to show us the Caddy flathead that's going in there?

You know, I might know where you can get a good hipo, reground, solid lifter cam for that thing! Lol!

thanks for asking guys! well the frame is kinda finished, and the next step is to put in the flatty in..i knew you would ask Buddy. i just ran into a problem that seems to be minor..but i just cant find a manuel gearbox. i think ive seen several over the years, but never needed one. actuelly i only need the bellhousing ,and the clutch. i am going to run a zephyr gear box behind that, just like Jack did. if someone in scandinavia reads this..please keep an eye out. otherwise i am sure you have one i can buy Buddy!
again the frame might go to the painter tomorrow, i'll take the chance and put the engine mounts at the same spot as Jack did back then..
thanks again for your interest..i'll try to put up some pics soon, but its pretty boring at this stage.

Palle, I have an extra bellhousing you can have, if you can't find one.

A ford FE pressure plate bolts right up to the flywheel, with no issues. An internation Pickup clutch works perfect too! These are both new parts, that you can buy at a parts store. I can get you the parts numbers if you need. This is a far better olution than using old, used parts, at least in my opinion.

Palle, I'm sending some parts over there to a gent named Mo. Mo is going to the Rally with a mutual friend you and he share, whom I believe is Anders?

I just sent Mo an email asking if he had an extra bellhousing.

    Palle,
I'm so glad that you are restoring Jack's old car. I love everything you are doing so far. The only thing I have wondered about since you posted was the use of a '32 Ford rear crossmember.

It seems to work, but it is a little strange to put a back dated part ('32) in a newer ('41) car. I realize the '32 cross member is a lot flatter than the '41. Also did you check to see how the spring fits in the cross member? My deuce has a late '40s rear spring and it had to be ground down to fit in the '32 crossmember.

A few of us from my club were at the RM Auction and, I for one, have been kicking myself for not acting on getting this very important historic custom. I know you got it later, but it was auctioned off for such a reasonable price that day. Keep up the excellent work!

Palle, here is the clutch info:

    11” Pressure Plate:

Napa NCL CA 7350 from a Ford T-Bird

    11” Clutch Plate:

    Napa NCL RCF 331

Good luck brother, as this is a killer build!

Palle, I am following the restoration of Jack Stewart's '41 Ford Custom. I am a big fan of '41 Fords. I have a '41 Deluxe Tudor, a chopped mild custom Super Deluxe Business Coupe and a '41 Super Deluxe Fordor. The Fordor is under my eye as we speak. I would love to section it about 2 inches (with fadeaways !) and a 2 inch chop. It will be powered by a 292 Ford Y-Block with T-Bird valve covers and Fenton three Deuce intake. Think it would make a super neat New Millenium Custom ! Will probably be stock bodied to get it running.

    Dave :)

Aaron..i get your point about the crossmember, but the way those guys did it back then, i feel it can be done. it was more like use whatever you have laying around..see the 'custombuild' crossmember it ran for 60 years! and the fact that you are more than lucky to find a crossmember in my neighbourhood. and your right..it was a fair price, even when i bought it!
Dave...thanks for following my build. please post some pictures of your 41's. your plans sounds real cool to me too!
    Buddy you have an email
and i promise to post some pictures soon

i promised a couple of photos..an Aaron your right about the spring size, we did handle that problem as you can see.

i changed the engine mounts but forgot to take pictures.
38FLATTIE..Buddy has been a fantastic help, and is about to have this period correct ****** made, using the right zephyr gear, CRESTLINER had one laying around. this is great news, and this way it will be build exactly like back then. and i can sleep at night.
i almost fitted the hydro transmission it the frame. i am happy i didnt.
when we have the exact length of the ******, I will make sure the engine mounts are in the right position, and have the frame powder coated.
    thanks Buddy..
heres the huge engine and hydro.

    Hey Palle,
Glad you worked out the cross member to fit the spring. Can't wait to see the motor and trans in! *****en! Keep up the great work.

Here's a photo I shot at RM's Ralph Whitworth Auction at the Petersen Museum in 2009. It's parked next to Von Dutch's van that he customized and used while working at the Cars of Stars museum in the '70s.
