I really like the mild chop on this 51 Coupe. Looks to me like it's only had about 3 inches taken out of its top. Any other photo's or information on the chop would be appreciated. Thanks, Jason
The owners name is Richard Medina...J&V Automotive in Chula Vista did the work on the car and according to the mag it is featured in it IS a 3" chop....
That chop looks awsome really nice car. 51 Chevy coupe is a fine car. Had a 50 Chevy did not chop it but wish I did look better chop.
I thought that was a sweet coupe when reviewing the pix. Really a tasty ride. S.M., seems to be blessed with some awesome customs as usual. Nice to see restraint on the chop, usually the tendiecies is to slam the lid. Excellent! ~sololobo~
Thanks for the info PAGEINC13, but which mag did you see it written up in? I agree with you all, I'm a Mild not Wild kind of guy so this chop to me looks perfect. Profile is nice and smooth yet it still retains a lot of the roundness inherent to the Coupe roofline. Anymore pics?
Thanks Bryan! I spent so much time in the Historic Customs Hall, I totally missed taking pics of this one.
Yo! That car was built by my homie Joe at J&V Automotive in Chula Vista. I'll pm you his number if you want... -Juan
Thanks Juan, Just want to know some basics about it. So far it sounds like its a 3" chop. Since the chop is so mild, did the sail panels still have to be reworked a lot to keep the profile right? I've been snagging pics of it from all over the HAMB and other sites, but haven't seen a profile shot yet! Bummed we missed SM this year.
Ha! I've been snaggin pics of this all weekend too since I just picked up a nice 51 coupe!! Whatcha got, let's see yours!!
More isn't always better, I've seem several mild chops thae really look good, too severe a chop ruins the lines of the car. Goes back to when customs fell out of style in the late 60's people went way overboard rather than cleaning up the stock lines.
Who said anything about chopping my Coupe? Thanks, Omar. Mahalo man, there's the profile shot I've been looking for!
Here's the rolling project. Since I took this shot, I've added Ponti belt line trim, 54 Studebaker hubcaps and filled in all the side trim holes. Static drop, shaved door handles, nosed, decked and frenched stock headlights.
Ahhh man I'm jealous... I've been looking for pontiac shark trim myself!!! hahaha seems we're nearly building the same car!! You still running the 216?
I looked for a long time too and ended up getting a set of that trim from a friend of mine here on the island. 40 bucks later they were mine! I had to shorten them and cutting into 60 year old stainless that I knew would be hard to replace was a little difficult, but it all turned out good. It's got a later model 250 and aluminum Powerglide with open drive and 55 Chev rearend. I really like how the mild chop retains the roundness of the Coupe roofline. How about pics of your 51? Got any pics of that chopped Coupe that haven't posted yet?
Still working on the T coupe!! Supposed to have it back to the body shop next week for paint!! As for my 51 coupe... I gotta go get it, haven't picked it up yet. So I really don't know what I'm dealing with. A close friend gave it to me a couple weeks ago!!
Here are some pics of mine.It was done by Tommy Moore in Dallas Ga.It looks alot like the one you asked about.Mine is 3" in the front and 3.5" in the rear with the stock window laid down.In my opinion this is the perfect chop for these cars. The rake is dead on.
Perfect-O! Let me know the next time you'll be on "Da Rock" with your camera and I'll show up with my hacksaw. Genuine Hawaiian Style Chop-Suey Coupe Cut Up Cousin!
Thats a great looking chop on your 51. I can see the effort put into keeping that sail panel round. It's not a large piece that was shaped and welded in, but it's just enough to give that crown some flow. Nice. I like how minimal it is. I'm wondering if there are different sets of problems and approaches to that area between a Sedan and Coupe?
