information for a small chevy engine builder around 29 palms

I heard tell from the g****vine that the 29 palms'ish area is rich with some "old timers" from the heyday. I am interested in some names of folks, living or dead that I can find information about. unfortunately locally there isn't much information around, was wondering if anyone here could point me in the right dierction. In particular, I heard about a particular gentleman that built custom engines that were peculiarly strong, and was supposedly working on some remarkable new engine technology before he p***ed away, living out of a school bus.
