Yep, Jaap did some nice welding there, Eric.;)

It's going to turn out great.

I'm at Nashville GoodGuys and there is not one '41 or '40 Plymouth here. I've seen several 30 somethings and one lone '48 but none of our ilk. I like being different. :)

Thanks Rock! In a way it's good there are not a lot around, keeping our beloved Plym's exclusive. Then again, after our little Hamb group of 40/41 Plymouth builders are finished building, everyone will want one.....:D

Started off this morning doing some more welding in the trunk. Then moved to the front of the car and started welding up the holes in the firewall. Also cut one larger piece of metal and welded that in place.

  5. dumb question, but is that the original fire wall? Or has one been built for engine setback? Looking good regardless.

Thanks Hivolt5.0. No it's not the original firewall. The previous owner "fabricated" this one, it's 2.5 mm thick, so very sturdy. The set back is approximately 2-3 inches. It's thick enough for me to mount my 90 degree pedals, so I decided to keep it in place. Considering this firewall was there during my engine mock up sessions, I'll keep it where it is. Further modifications are on the way though.....

Next was to clean up the welded plate. Started to weld the holes above the firewall. This area is in fairly bad shape, so I'm going to think about how I'm going to tackle this. Maybe I'll replace it completely or make another panel in front of it which will then bend around the horizontal piece below it. Haven't decided yet....Also started welding/cleaning up the tunnel entrance.

That was my initial reaction too. Why such a thick firewall? But after evaluating everything, I realised that it may just come in handy. It's thick enough to mount the steering column drop and the pedal set. It will also give me the option to mount other things behind the dash without any concerns. Also, by having a smooth firewall, all the attention will go to the Hemi. (a lot more important!:):D)

Got a chance to work on the chassis this morning. Flipped her over all by myself without any damage. Took me a while to find the balancing points, and with a little careful thought, anyone can do it! Going to finish off the last welding/cleaning up underneath this week so I can start making plans to have it powdercoated next month. Decided to have the frame powdercoated black to coincide with the black Hemi block.

Wow, you have been busy. Lookin good, I was wondering how far back my firewall would end up being set back. We also closed in the vent cowl like you did. Thanks for the great photos, they help alot! Your car looks like it is coming together quite well.

Did you know that you were going to do this much work when you first purchased the car?

I'll take some pics side on of the firewall to show you the set back.

In answering your last question, it's a simple no. The plan was to take it apart, drop a Hemi in, build it up, paint, upholster and drive. I've never regretted taking it to the next level though, not for one single minute. It's given me a lot of pleasure, especially on the fabrication and thinking process side of things. I've learnt to be patient and have become an avid measurer. This is probably the key in combination with good planning. Do it right the first time has become somewhat of a motto for me. Even if it means taking a lot of time to accomplish this.

Eric, is there any place in the Netherlands where you can it open up like on the Autobahn? I'd love to see the shock on the faces of the Beemer & Porsche drivers when this car blows right past them.

Unfortunately we have a maximum speed limit on some highways of 75 mph but even at this speed it should be fun to scare a few German and rice cars. The autobahn is about 100 miles from from my place and I'm sure I'll take the car over there when its finished, just to wake up the Hemi!

WOW. Such a nice car and only 20 miles from where I live. I can totally understand why you fell in love with it. Great lines! I'm also a big Mopar fan. I'm currently looking for a better garage space in The Netherlands to put in my Chrysler and start up a kustom project myself, thanks to all the HAMB topics which are so inspiring and the best howto's there are.

I hope to see it in real life some time :) Truly inspiring this!

It was time again to go and do some real work again today. There are quite a few gaps around the firewall so it was time to fabricate and weld. In the first pic you can see the gap from the outside. Considering I want to be able to hear music while I'm driving, it's necessary to get the cabin sound proved. Later on, I'm going to cover it all with Dynamat and carpet. Got both sides done.

Thank you CollegeKid, that makes two of us! Things are progressing steadily at the moment, only held back by time and money. Or am I the only one out there with this problem?
