Smooth firewalls usually look lousy, concentrate on other parts of the car.

I am getting ready to get mine straigtened out. Lookin at 16 ga. probabally. Maybee 18. Whatever I can get a fair price on given the current steel prices!

  4. Most firewall's are 16 gauge. If you make it totally flat it'll act like the bottom of an oil can when it heats and cools with motor heat. That is, if your running a hood.

so would it be better to go with a thicker gauge of steel - to help keep it from 'oil canning'??

  6. I had no choice because some speed freak butchered my firewall before I bought the car. I'm pretty sure I used 18 gauge, but as you can see from the inside photo I left much of the perimeter of the old firewall intact. It's solid as a rock, no oil canning here.

when i got rid of the stock heater i filled and smothed my caddy fire wall with 16 gauge only because of the big flat area.

  8. Heavier could help out. Are you talking about an over lay like Crush 1776 or a complete new firewall? What kind of car are you working on?

    its a 61 chevy wagon.

not replacing, just covering over the original.

  10. In that case I'd probably just use 18 gauge. Will the master and heater still be mounted on it? I'd also use some panel adheasive to attach it instead of welding it on.

heater is gone. master will be on it for now.

i will prob. weld it around the edges and then maybe spot weld it in a few places that are kind of hidden and out of sight.

    later.

    thanks.

I like em.. They can really clean up a car's look. I guess it depends on the look you're going for... 16 ga on mine.
