oil leaking problems again

Can anybody shed some light on this. I've got a 352 in my truck and is leaking oil pretty bad. If anyone has seen my build thread I've replaced the cam, and then replaced the cam plug and every gasket except the rear main seal. Now I can see a little bit of a leak on the front of the intake manifold and now my rear main seal is leaking.

On my last trip I went through a quart of oil every 80 miles. I'm going to pull the plugs tonight, but I didn't notice it blowing smoke. I'm going to pull the engine to fix the rear main seal and the intake manifold, but what could be causing that much loss in a short time?

thats a pretty big leak, i would think it would be somewhere thats close to oil thats under pressure. if you were burning that much it would look like a james bond smokescreen. when you did the oil pan gasket did you silicone the rear part where it runs across the rear main cap? the rear main may be leaking but the pan gasket ****s up to the side seals and the oil slinger on the crank dumps out the slot in the main cap so there is big leak potential.

I suggest having a look at the crankcase breather system. Maybe a plugged PCV valve?

I agree. I had an issue with a fresh motor in one of my cars. After weeks of fighting with it and checking everything I could think of, someone suggested the crankcase breather system. I found a partly plugged breather on the valve cover. The stupid thing was new, but was faulty, and was only allowing about 1/2 the amount of air to enter as it should have. Since it couldn't get enough fresh air, the PCV couldn't pull enough air out of the system and it built pressure inside the system and the PCV was pulling oil mist through it into the carb. I was going through a qt in about 100 mile, but there was no James Bond smoke screen behind me, takes a lot more oil then that to make a smoke screen. Gene

    Several things to check:

    1. Check to make sure your valve covers have baffles in them. If not, your PCV valve could be ****ing up oil.

    2. Do you have oil restrictors in your cylinder heads (holley jet)? If not, you could be pumping too much oil (if you have a HV oil pump) to the top of your motor and the oil could be draining down your valve guides.

Just a few things to check

Make sure your oil pressure switch isn't leaking through the switch at higher rpms/higher oil pressure. I just replaced mine after going through 1 qt in 50 miles with no visible leaks. Just a thin film of oil on the left side of the engine compartment.

i didnt think about the pcv, if the valve covers dont have baffles there should be small bosses for screws to bolt em on, u can just use little peices of sheetmetal. or u can just get baffled valve cover grommets.

Hmm, maybe I won't be pulling the engine..

No baffles in the covers. What is weird is that I don't notice smoke at all. Even on start up which made me rule out valve guide seals.

I don't have the switch, I have a guage so it has a br*** fitting and a plastic hose. That's not leaking though, at least from what I can see.

    1. no I dont have baffles

    2. I have no idea about the oil restrictors. I know theres some drain holes that are NOT clogged in the heads. I replaced the oil pump with a plain jane oil pump.

  11. Check and rework the PCV system. Don't try to trick yourself by trying to hide it under the intake like I did.
Does it blow oil smoke like a Mother Father when you crank it off? PCV, IF that is the problem. I trick Fathered myself on that one, trust me.
Damn, did I not use correct words and spelling??

Mine is in the valve cover, not the intake.

I think id have more of a mess under the hood if it was just the valve covers not having baffles, but maybe between it getting ****ed in the pcv valve, blowing out of the breather, small intake manifold leak, and a small rear main seal leak its all adding up.
