    running into a problem, i swapped a c4 out of a 69 302 mustang and put it into my my f100 thats got a 73 302

the problem is that when the transmission is mounted up flush to the motor the motor wont spin because the torquecoverter studs rub on splashgaurd and im guessing would rub on the block too.

is there a way to make this set up work?

    thanks!

My guess is that you don't have the Torque converter fully seated. If you have forced it together there is a good chance you have ruined the front pump - seen it happen a few times. All small block C-4 pretty much interchange although there is a slight difference in Pan Fill converters vs Case fill converters and of course the small and big bell housing differences (157 tooth vs 164 tooth)

69 and 70 use different splines in the converter, iirc. I hope you used the Mustang converter

also there are two different styles of bellhousings, and cases, and 1970 was a big year for changes in the C4.

The two previous posts are 100% correct, I have 2 rods with the 302-c4 setup , and the most frustrating thing when working with fords is the changes along the production run, Sounds like your setup does not have one part correct, I would guess at the least you have ruined the front pump, do some research on the hamb or web about combatbility , try to find a trans shop that is willing to help you , sorry I cannot be of any more help,,,Sam

70 is actually kind of a ******* year. All early C-4's (64-69) had 24 spline on both sides (Input shaft and Clutch Hub). The 70 had 26 spline on both sides. In 71 they went to 26 spline on the input and 24 on the Clutch hub.
Like I said, i think he doesn't have the TC properly seated and maybe it's not even the right one - although they really don't go together at all if they are wrong.

thanks for the replys, i used the mustang converter, it may not have been seated all the way, will it be obvious if i pull everything back off if the pump is shot?

i used the mustang converter and it bolted to the flexplate from the 73, but should i have used the flexplate off of the 69?

The flex plate is fine. All 260-302's from 63 to 81 were 28 oz balance and the change over to the 50 oz was in 82. So if the diameter is right for your dust shield/bellhousing that is fine. (there is also a different TC bolt pattern but that was mainly on trucks 11.4 vs 10.5")

You should be able to bolt up the ****** to the engine w/o any problems IF you got the TC in right. If you haven't tried to start the engine you may have only messed up the TC & not the pump. I busted a TC that way once, but the pump was OK. You push it in, turn it a bit & slide it in further, been a while since I've done a Ford, can't remember if that's it or one more time needed.

You need to measure the distance from the Bellhousing mating surface to the pads on the TC where it bolts up. When fully seated it should be 1 1/8"

C4 and C6 plates are the same IF the diameter needed and and TC bolt pattern is the same. In other words there are flex plates that fit both transmissions as the height off the crank is the same.
