Working on a 56 265 chevy motor. I'm planning on putting 2 fours on it and want a hot cam to match. I'd like to run a solid lifter cam. I found lots of cams, however my question is on the lifters. I heard a rumor that 265's had the oil hole for the lifters in a different spot then 283's, 327's, etc. This true ? If so where can I find a solid lifter for a 265 ?
To my knowledge, solid lifters are the same 265 through 350 the 265 oiling difference is in the distributor, it has a special notch or flat spot on it to allow oil to p*** from one port in the block to another. I ran a 265 in my 57 for a while and it had solid lifters from the factory. They were no different than the solid lifters I put in my 283. Look or ask at your local auto parts store for solid/flat tappet lifters for a 265 or a corvette 283/270HP and see if there is a different number. Pat
The cam shaft is different for the early engines and I would have to look at one to teell you exactly how they are different, I keep one in the garage just for that reason. So when you get your camshaft PM me. The dizzy is different on the early blocks as well and needs to be clocked properly for proper oiling. But the lifters are the same from the beginnings to the end of the original style small block.
Instead me repeating what has been just said, there a very good thread ***led "Lets Build a 265 Chevy V8!!!!!" on here. Just seach it. Lots and lots of info.
The difference is the 265 cam has a slot milled in the back journal to allow oil to the rockers. That's the only difference I know of.
The early V8s had a different part number for mechanical lifters than the '57 and newer engines--I think that the difference was in the placement of the oil hole on the side of the lifter body, in the recess. My early '70s copy of "How to Hot Rod Your Small Block Chevy" explains it.
