Hello,<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o> <o> </o> I just dropped in my freshly built 383 stroker with a 6-71 blower into my Monte Carlo. It is married up to a T56 (6 speed manual from 97 formula firebird). I also have 4:10 gears in the rear end if that has any influence on my problem. I got it running over the weekend and drove it around the block. I was going down the road in 4th gear at about 1500 rpms and I juiced it. It almost immediately kicked it out of gear pretty violently. (shifter smashed my hand pretty good). I put it back in gear and it drove fine. I then put it into 5th at about 2000 rpms and once in gear for a bit stomped on it and the same thing happened. <o></o> <o> </o> Any thoughts on what could be causing this? <o></o>
Motor mounts or trans mounts allowing everything to move to much, or more likely worn shifter linkages/bushings, or worn synchros (internal trans probs).
I am not sure I follow you on this. Tis is my first time playing with a manual transmission. I had someone put in the T56 with a 350 I had in at the time. when i swapped motors i left the transmission in the car, swapped over the clutch onto the new motor and slid it into place. I left the bellhousing connected to the transmission.
How would I know if it was the mounts? If that is the case would swapping to poly mounts help? how do i check if it is the linkage/bushings that are worn? I am hoping that it is not the synchros. I don't know much but i know that means a new transmission or a rebuild.
My internet guess would be to look towards a worn synchro and/or gear. I usually wear out 2nd to 3rd on my transmissions, but a 3-4 with that monster could go for sure. I guess before I went too crazy I'd check the linkage and make sure it isn't out of adjustment.
When you say the linkage are you talking abouit the shift linkage or the clutch linkage. I am pretty new to tranmissions. I had someone else put in the 6 speed and when i swapped motors i never took the transmission out just to be certain nothing would change or get crossed up but i guess it may have.
The shift linkage on the trans, make sure it is fully engaging fourth. It may just need a little turn or you may need a rebuild. Have some one shift from 3 to 4 while you watch, make sure there isn't any slop. If it seems good and has full movement, pull er and take her in.
I'd say synchros. Figure that trans is 14 yrs old, Most likely has never been rebuilt(no one drove 97 formulas easy either) and a blown 383 small block is pushing a lot of snot through a trans that came in a car with around 300hp little more if it was a ws6. Save your money on the rebuild and buy a tremec.
Did somebody miss this? " into my Monte Carlo". I appreciate the fact that everyone is trying to help but this is obviously an off topic vehicle. Have the rules been relaxed and now we can start talking about any year, make, model?
I have gotten that same thought from a few people now that I have spoken with. I am really just trying to exhaust other options before I have to go that route.
I appreciate it also. I was unaware that there was a criteria on make, model and year. I apoligize that I missed that somewhere along the line. I appreciate the input I got from those looking to help. Thank you, sorry again.
this is not a Monte Carlo question, but a transmission question. it could be in any car. I don't think the Monte Carlo is causing the problem. maybe he shoud put the motor/trans in a Model A and see if that fixes it.
HAH! Good one!!! Uh...to the problem, lotsa H.P. thru the trans now, so any wear would be multiplied. On the new engine, was the pilot bushing/bearing (in the crank) good? Worn pilot would do this in the 'higher' gears.
