I've having some issues trying to find a hose to fit what I need. The mount is right in the way for a normal looking hose. What type of pipe would be suited to get a couple of the hard bends done ? I could run some exhuast pipe for now but that really doesn't sound like a long term deal. Maybe some thicker tubing or sweat some copper together?
it appears to me that you should be able to get a rubber hose in there. how far from the mount is the water pump inlet?
Not sure I undertand the problem. I needed a hard right angle lower hose on my current build, I went to NAPA and looked over some hoses, bought one with the right curve in it, cut it out of the hose, and used it....
It's not just the bend at the pump , the other 2 sharp (90 degree) bends needed once it clears the mount. It has to drop after the mount than bend back again to the radiator. I thought putting a pipe in would make the plumbing in easier? Maybe my pics don't really show how awkward the bends need to be
Maybe you are right different pic because in those doesn"t look hard to find a preform hose to work kinda easy.
Don't forget that you can alter the radiator outlet as another option. I had a similar problem with a SBC with hurst mount in a 27 T, and solved it by getting the lower radiator fitting changed so that it came out at 45 degrees pointing towards the water pump. Then I could just use a simple 90 degree water pump hose.
Well i'm trying a little differant approach instead of guessing what I need, I had some preheater tube and fitted it and we'll see if I have any luck at the parts store again, it's not as bad as I thought. Maybe 1 piece or find 2 pieces and join them together with some pipe?
I had a similiar problem with my SBC and Aluminum Radiator install in my Avanti. It looks a lot like yours with a couple of bends needed. I used exhaust pipe of the correct diameter and cut, bent and fit until I had a steel unit that faced each outlet directly. I purchased a foot of straight radiator hose, cut the lengths I needed and connected the steel unit to each outlet. I left about an inch or so of gap between the steel pipe and the outlets to allow flex. It been on about a year with no problem and great cooling. Initially, I looked at a couple of auto stores that will let me in the back room and there was nothing I could find to fit. If necessary, PM me and I'll take a pix or two.
You can cut the mount back and make a verticle gusset under the front edge where you trimmed it back. I have done it on a couple for sbc. Also maybe try a 65 mustang lower hose.
Now dont laugh heres the deal turn the pump over. we had the same problem on a 32 ford with a 327 turn the pump over found a hose that fit. I know crazy but it works
Not going to work on that pontiac motor. I like the " pre-heater mock up to the parts store" idea. Some copper fittings would work good too.
Yep, mine was same, got 3 2 1/2" steam pipe elbows and a short length of straight steam pipe. Welded an inch or so of straight pipe on on the end of 2 elbows, then carefully mucked around holding the 3 bits in the close position to mark for a tack. Once painted black, looks like rubber, and the question does get asked. Remember fan clearance also.
