i want to lower my 49 merc using air bags,so when i park i can sit it on the ground. The car sits on a79 olds 98 frame and 4 corner coil suspension. what is the most economical way of doing this?
Contact J Man he's got a complete setup new cheap. here's a link to his chit. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=51753
first off you need to do some messuring to see if the real suspesion has enough downward travel to lay out. if it doesnt youre going to have to build a new suspension or just setlle with just being low and not laying out. for parts and tech help hit up jason at http://www.suicidedoors.com/ if you have to ask him anything you gotta call though.... if you are going to use the rear suspenson youll need to buy cups that go into the upper spring pocket and new axle brakets. then cups for the front and youll probably need drop spindals.
ROFL that is EXACTLY what i was thinkin when i saw the thumbnail of that car!!! i was thinkin,,, WTF.. he's got a chicken-coupe!!!
here is another shot--tok the shed away I would like to build an air bag system from parts that i can gather up localy . any one done this and how?
I second that.. just ordered my bags from them and receiving them tomorrow. My buddies stand by them for their stuff for their mini trucks and stuff. I have seen the quality of the custom fabbed links and stuff.. very good quality stuff. Really good prices too.
its not like everyshop sells this stuff.. so unless you have a specialty shop near you ups and suicide doors are your friend
i like the sewer-side hinges he makes, but the price is kinda on the steep side tho... i like his design and the swing on them is what i am looking for. all of the guys i have spoken with that have bag kits from SSD are real happy with them and the service they got as well. T
if you want good new stuff let me know. i'm an Airlift dealer. if you have any SPECIFIC questions ask them here and i'll do my best to answer them. i have designed and fabricated air ride setups for MANY different vehicles new and old. i've been around air ride systems since they first caught on with the mini trucking crowd. i used to work on semi truck (and trailer) air suspensions for a living too. check your PMs...
Hey Ray A friend from mini truckin days gone by used to run old airbrake valves for his valves. Most shops that sell firestone bags should be able to supply you the bags. Check the big truck shops out. they'll sell you the air line and fittings you need. Brackets I'm sure you can fab up yourself out of pipe, just keep cutting away at the height till you get it on the ground. If you have any truck wrecking yards near by that'd be the best place, they also have really nice tanks. Compressors can be made from A/C compressors but thats a whole other post.
not too sure if it helps you at all Ray, but Hal at Grease Monkey had his bagged locally and his is channelled over an Oldsmobile as well.
Go for it, I'm a Suicide Doors customer any day, they are amazing I couldn't believe the quality of the stuff when it showed up for that price... The quality of service was even better, goodluck getting anything reliable for a better price than them hands down. Not to mention you could bag a school bus with the heavy stuff they sent me - awsome.
us places are cool but for canadians when we end up paying shipping, customs, brokrage fees, etc, its usually better to find it locally. Seems anything I order from the states I double the price and thats what it ends up costing in canadian dollars even though the exchange rate is pretty decent right now.
Ray, check out Greggs distributers for all the stuff you'll need (tank, valves, bags..etc...) It's the cheapest in town. Go with ½" air lines and you'll keep your costs down.
