Top Secret Chrome Cleaner Ingredient

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Charlie Chops 1940, Jun 4, 2011.

  1. Back in the 60's and maybe even in the 70's ya went to the parts store and bought a can of liquid chrome cleaner that actually cleaned of bugs and little bits of hazy rust and made yer shiny stuff presentable again. I finally used up the last of the old cans and bought a new can of chrome cleaner to go after the chrome suspension parts on my track roadster.

They're kidding, right? There is nothing in there that remotely cleans anything but recent water spots off of chrome.

    Chrome cleaner doesn't clean...
    Bug remover doesn't remove...
    Tar remover doesn't remove...
    Carb cleaner doesn't clean...

What was the active ingredient in those and other handy chemical mixes that did the work we bought them for.

    Charlie

Any suggestions for current products of this nature that work?

I used to use Chrome Cleaner by Turtle Wax, it came in a small tin and I thought it was really good. I haven't been able to find it in a store for several years now and I just used up my last tin of it a few months ago. Now I have to use the crappy Mothers stuff. I find it really helps to go over everything with 0000 Fine Steel Wool first, then rub on the "cleaner".

Does 0000 Steel wool hurt the chrome? I know it works great but does it affect the chrome?

You can still get Semi Chrome but it's aluminum polish, not chrome polish. There's a big difference. Aluminum polish will actually scratch chrome and leave it hazy looking after a while.

I still use DuPont and Turtle Wax Heavy Duty Chrome polish. I think it's the same stuff with different labels. It'll take a light coat of rust off of chrome if you work at it.

A lot of good products had Benzene, Carbon Tet, or some other baddie as part of the formula. Lots of toxics and carcinogens.

  19. same thing lol:eek:. that shit cant be good for you, i once soaked some engine parts in it for a week just to see what happened. all the aluminium parts went brown and really soft (you could scratch it away with your fingernail). works great as chrome cleaner tho

No it will really clean it up nice, just don't get off into the paint with it. 000 minimum but stick with 0000 if possible. It will also make the old SS trim shine up nice.

We use Sima-chrome at work for polishing stainless molds and aluminum prototype molds works great. I find if I take it out and smear it over the stainless and use a bob in my dremel my stainless trim comes out like a mirror, just dont stay in one area to long and to clean-up use Karosene to remove the polish but alcohol to remove the karosene. For chrome I find Auto-sol works better than Sima-chrome but not by much.

  22. The old chrome cleaner always smelled like amonia but worked great

  23. This stuff will clean almost anything...stainless, fiberglass, glass, aluminum, chrome...removes rust, scale, etc. I've used it for years. Buy it at the grocery store.

Oh yeah I almost forgot about that smell.......that when you know its the good stuff, when you can smell the active ingredient... cat piss.... lol

I have even tried colgate tooth paste will work in a pinch.

I find once I am done polishing I like to wax over it, seems to keep the shine longer.

The thing that I find works the best is kerosene.

I would love to have been the guy that first put kerosene in a pint container and called it mineral spirits!!!!!!!!!!!

He must have made millions doing that.

    Works for me. Jimbo
