Tried to install my motor today but things just didn't go right. Got off to a late start. Still a some dudes tried to help (thanks Frank, Garrett, and Louie).
I got as far as I could after the fellas split The trans linkage isn't the same on the 1981 C4 as it is in the 1963 Ford-O-Matic. Look at the pics and see what you suggest.
Also, even though both ******'s were the same length, the yokes were different, the one from the C4 being about an inch shorter. On closer inspection, it looks like the U-Joints are also different sizes.
I gotta be honest and say that I'm lost here (not ashamed or embaressed).
I don't know what my next step should be???
    I also lack some tools.
I welcome any ideas or suggestions.
Or if anyone has some free time on a Sunday or Monday and wouldn't mind coming over to a lend a hand that would be cool.
    Thanks in advance.

I didn't know you had a C4 going in there. The C4 picture looks as if the kick down detente is damaged or broken off. Is it? Hope not. PIA to swap out.
We can make you a custom trans linkage rod and then we will have to route a kick down cable to your throttle ***embly. I can TIG up something for it.
The trans is not a terrible situation, we need to locate the correct trans yoke and then measure out the different universal joints.
We need to make you a new throttle linkage too, I didn't like some of those bubble gum wad looking welds that the previous torturer / owner did there, we'll put something together that looks sweet and keeps things reliable.

So you have a yoke that slips into that trans that looks as if it will mate across to the drive shaft? I have a place to get the custom universal joint. I''l add it to this post.

Was that C4 in a 4 wheel drive truck, trying to figure out the trans yoke.

She'll go together fairly quick now that all the parts are with you. Happy you got everything together. Wish we could have got more done but the late start sort of tore the sails out of the day. Let me know how your week is going, we'll see if I can't swing by and check out the needs for that trans linkage, I'm more worried about how the column selector is going to recieve another gear than anything. Don't s**** off those old units yet. May need a part or two out of there.

I was sort of wondering, did you leave the yoke in there so as not to spill fluid? Were you going to change the fluid and filter on the C4? We should.

i'v seen that type of trans yoke before, if i remember right i think it was in a granada or something like that. a conversion u-joint should not be difficult to find. measure the diameter of the cups, and the width of the joint from side to side..and they will ask if its inside or outside retaining clips. about as easy as that..

Yes the detent was damaged, I have now pulled the motor and trans apart again and taken the pan off the bottom to remove that "flat" screw that was broken. The good part is that I have the yoke that was with that C4. I already changed the filter and modulator. There is no fluid in there except for in the torque convertor. The c4 was actually in an '81 Thinderbird. I bought some threaded rod yesterday to make carb linkage. Gonna try this again on Sunday early as hell since its all in the garage now.

I'm wondering if that 81 T Bird C4 needs that yoke that's with the trans, might that be a balancer on that yoke? Let me know if you need something welded up, this weekend is bad for me, have to get the kid back to school, I'd like to see you driving around in this car soon.

    I look at my c4 and that's what I'm using. I thought I've seen one before. Its a 68 200 and 68 c4 in a 68 four door falcon.

The yoke was a sort of "harmonic balancer" but I've only seen them on T-birds with independent rear suspension. The tranys in those were no different than the ones in solid axle cars. Lots of stuff out there that I ain't seen though.

Blades, I looked all over the net and couldn't find much info about that balancer on the C4 yoke. Kind of tough to find things out about it.

Is the pin sticking out of the shifter linkage broken off? That is the kick down linkage for dropping down a gear when p***ing or nailing it.
Don't give up on it yet, we just have to figure out how tough it will be to put a new pin in there.
Does your yoke from your car fit into that C4 or is the splining different?
I'm struggling on those photos, Is there anything left of the shift linkage on that C4?
Looks like just a bracket left there.

    I'm adding;
Does the cruisomatic fit on the later engine. You still have all the parts for it? It may be a way out, worst case scenario.

    sbftech.com, some cool stuff there

So is it something that must remain on that TBird yoke? My combo is also 200/c4, I measured my old 170/fordomatic and it was the exact same length as the 200/c4. I guess it's all coming down to the yoke and drive shaft. I suppose that I should just use the yoke that came on the c4, get correct uJoint, and have drive shaft extended. Is this correct?

  16. How's it going with your car?

Any of you guys planning to show your cars at Retro on Roscoe? I don't know how to register but I'm pretty interested. Last year GodSpeedBrokenPress had his car there.
