Trying to recover (at work) from a long hard weekend in the shop. Mikhett finally finished up the bodywork and prep on his Ford, and it was ready for paint (a statement I've heard SO many times before, and been disappointed, but not this time). So we agreed on a weekend to do the dirty deed, and now we're done! Also got to meet fellow HAMBer "pipes" who came by to collect some parts for the 54 Merc Mike sold him, I guess to fund finishing the Galaxy. So after Mike spent the morning cleaning the booth, and his car, we decided to paint the roof first, so we could jack up the car to make shooting the body easier on Sunday. Well, at first, Mike wanted to do the whole car "Vanilla Shake" white. Pretty boring, so I convinced him (wasn't that difficult) to do the roof in something interesting. We setteld on real HOK Kandy Apple Red, to go with the facotry red interior. Of course I had some sitting on the shelf, so materials were not an issue. The shoot went well. Got it done in time, and only 2 beer breaks. I did it over an Orion co**** silver base, and added a little bit of Gold Microflake in with the first couple coats of Kandy. Sunday, my team got started early, and uncovered the car, and remasked the roof. jacked it up onto stands, so when Mike arrived, he just had to Pre-clean the car, and tack rag it off. Wetted the floor, and then he handed off the job to me, while he did "hose duty", and kept an eye on my shooting technique. The Vanilla Shake PPG paint came out acceptable, not great, due to my unfamiliarity with PPG paints, and that the paint really set up quickly. I couldn't get it to flow out very well. Probably the wrong reducer, or activator for the temperature we were working in. I always use Dupont and HOK paints, so I didn't have any other PPG materials to adjust for this. But a bit of sanding and buffing, and it should be just fine. Now it's back to Mike's for ***embly, and if he likes, I can help him later with the sanding and buffing. Mike hasn't even seen the car, as he had to run off to work SUnday afternoon. So here's the pics, it looks good, Mike! Don't take too long to get it put together!!!!!
Thanks guys...I hope Mike checks in to see the pics! Toddster, I use a Sata HVLP digital 2 with a 1.4 tip. Candy is so sensitive to shoot, you just have to use a good gun. But I'm sure a 1.3 or other would work as well, as long as you know your gun well.
That's a great looking combo. This has been a long time coming...really happy that it turned out this sharp. Nice one Mark and Mike!
Thanks Again Mark!Yeah i moved at a snails pace on this resto. But after being in the shop for the first time after my daughter p***ed away and seeing Mark the spark has been re-lit.Im thinking about wheels and tires(astro supremes and pinner whites)! My only upholstery option with the original interior is BLACK!The fire engine red clashs with the candy red roof. Thanks for all the comments.
Thanks Chopolds, that is also the base-clear gun I use but have never shot any Candy with it I thought maybe I'd have to use a 1.5 tip. I'll try some on a panel and see if I can keep it stripe free. Thanks again
Hey chopolds, ' looks like ya done it again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ' maybe it's just a west cost thing, but whata bout some Watson scallops in small flake & overshot in red candy, over the large white flat panels on that Ford? " Life ain't no Disney movie "
Thanks, Rex...I was hoping some day to get a little more "pizzazz" on the car for him, I'm still so happy I convinced him to go with the candy on the roof, instead of all white. The white is single stage, so anything I put over it will just lay on top, not be buried in the clear. No big deal, it's more 'trad' anyway. See that, Mike???????? Needs something to help break up all that white!!!!!!! I'm not the only one who thinks so!
Hey, Heh, heh, heh...................... " is anyone ever "done'' painting Chrome reverse with baby moons, Astros or Raders for wheels? " The problem with america is that the guys who really know how to run the country are all cutting hair and tending bar " -George Burns -
