Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 57ford/60thunderbird, Jun 6, 2011.

  1. hey all i started getting my flathead cleaned up for some fresh paint (in the car) tonight i noticed a couple things and want to know if they are normal

first my waterpump pulleys are different diameters my driverside is larger then my p***enger side pulley is this the way it should be?

second i took my p***enger side exhaust manifold off ( got new headers) and the 2 bolts on the front exhaust port are larger then the other 4 it doesnt look to have been drilled and tapped or anything

this is my first flattie so im still learning so bare with me.... well dont get BARE , just be patient with my flattie ignorance okie:D

  2. Are the pump diameters different, or are you talking about pulley width? As a general rule, most of the earlier pump pulleys are 5/8" wide, and I THINK that 1952/53 are 3/8".
As far as the exhaust bolts...yes, the front exhaust bolts are bigger than the rest. Don't know why though...

The front two block exhaust manifold studs on Ford flathead V8's are 7/16, the rest are 3/8". The fronts were/are heavier due to the extra weight of the x-over pipe used on the stock exhaust system.

The '50-'53 Ford and Merc cars use two 3/8" narrow belts. The pump pulleys have different diameters, and match the different crank pulley sheave diameters for each belt.
