    Hi,
I'm looking to buy a TIG Welder to attach 19 gauge patch panels onto the fenders of my 1936 Ford. A Miller EconoTIG is for sale near me. My garage DOES have 220 volt. Does anyone have this machine? Like it or not? How much is a "lightly" used unit worth?
    Any comments are appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Bruce

To me, anything with "econo" in the name means low quality, or at the least, slightly inferior.

Miller stuff will be fine, in my experience anyway.

I own one, bought it used. Does it's job when I do mine! Way better machine than the import inverter boxes. I don't run a production shop, but for the **** I build it is way good!

  6. The Miller Diversion 165 and 180 are also worth a look.

I bought one several years ago, still have it, love it for small stuff, not so much for the bigger stuff.

If you can get it for $800 or less, you're doing good. They were $1200 new.

There are better more up to date machines available from Miller.

A drawback to the Econo tig is the 30 amp minimum output in tig mode of 20 amps on AC when welding aluminum and 30 amps minimum when welding DC

This is just too much if you attempt sheetmetal and any thin small stuff.

In short the econo tig was a poor machine and a much better choice is the new Diversion 165 or 180.

I just bought a 10 year old digital Syncrowave 250 for $1400 bucks. You can find a better deal on a used Econotig if you're patient. Or spring a few hundred more bucks and get a new Diversion 165. You'll never look back with a Miller.

  11. X2 on the Diversion, and try and hold out for the 180 if you can. Last welder you will ever have to buy unless your a big fab shop.
