I know this event isn't geared toward hot rodders, but it's still a pretty cool deal and it's coming up very soon. Corky Coker owns the Great Race now, and it's going to start this weekend, here in Chattanooga, TN, ending in Bennington, VT on June 17th. Even if you don't necessarily like the time, speed, endurance rally stuff, it might be cool to check out some of the cars at the host cities. I would list all of the cities and stops, but it would probably be easier to just direct you to the Great Race website...www.greatrace.com. The city stops are free to the public, by the way. Since our shop located in "Corkyville", the guys here at Honest Charley Garage will be helping with registration and getting the cars sticker'd up. The race kicks off on Saturday morning at 10am at the Coker Tire headquarters. Anyway, just wanted to let you guys know.
The Great Race was one of the most challenging (and fun) things I've ever been a part of. If I could afford it, I'd do it again in a heartbeat. And you'll see some of the rarest speed equipment ever made in the race. You get a handicap by the age of your car, and your car counts as the newest part on the car. But you can do all the mods you want as long as you can prove that those things were available in the year that your racing as. So you'll see some of the most period correct stuff around built just to run the race. No one would be disappointed to check out this race.
Saw them stop in Carrizozo, N.M. for lunch several years ago. Very strange collection of iron but sure would be fun to rally across the U.S. in a '32 roadster, flathead, generator skinny tires and all. After they pulled back out into the desert I climbed into my 33 Willys, turned on the air and headed for home...
IF YA DON'T GO , YOU WILL BE KICKING YOURSELF IN DA *** LATER. enjoy "AND THE BOWTIE ROLLS ON" TO MANY PIX ....LATER
Friday is registration, so there will be cars ****tered all over the place around Coker's compound. They're also having a "warm up rally" on Friday afternoon, so I'm ***uming several folks will partake in that. There are already a few cars at the hotel across the street...these guys are serious!
Since Corky now owns the race, he will not be competing, but he is driving the 1937 Shafer 8 race car along the entire route. He loves this stuff!
It is very worthwhile to see, especially if they are starting nearby. In 2003 they started right down the street from my house. Had a car show also. Many unique cars compete, pretty cool to see them driving off.
X2......This is a don't miss deal . I didn't know Coker took it over though. "AND THE BOWTIE ROLLS ON"
I am going to drive up to Maggie Valley, NC and watch them roll into town and go through the motorcycle museum again. It is the first stop.
Several of the streets have been closed off for the event. Funny, I thought the race started in Chattanooga...
Thanks for posting pictures WM3! It's a wonder we didn't run into each other...I just ran outside to snap a few pictures.
I'll check in with ya next time. Took the pictures while grabbing a big burger from the Southside Bistro next door!
IF ANYBODY IS CLOSE & MISS THIS , THEY HAVE TO BE MENTALLY DISTURBED. It does'nt cost except for gas to go. ENJOY. "AND THE BOWTIE ROLLS ON"
First few folks rolled in today, and we're expecting a bunch more tomorrow and Friday. Looks like there is a lot of work to get done before this deal takes off on Saturday!
