I keep hearing about them, but I am told by others they don't exist. A guy at a swap meet told me he had two at home an wanted $500.00 for the pair. What did they come on if they did make them? Also what did the 16" x 5" '40 style come on? Thanks for any info.
They came on 40 v8-60's, yes they are very rare, and the last set I saw on ebay sold for much more than that. hotrodders "back then" used them to run the narrow 16x4' tires and motorcyle tires. If my memory serves me correctly the were off of trucks. I could very well be wrong on this one though. Drew
Like gasser said, 40 V8 60 only. I was watching the pair on eBay a couple three weeks ago, that was fuckin nuts. Lazy wealthy people sitting at home sure dont mind spending to much on parts. A guy at a swap meet today was trying to sell two gutted out 97s for $150 each. I told him, you been jackin off watching to much eBay
I don't think so: 1928-1929= 21" wires 1930-1931= 19" wires 1932= 18" x 3 3/4" wires 1935= 16"x 3 3/4" wire wheels 1936-1939=16" x 4" wide 5 1940= 16" x 4" for 60 hp -steel and 16" x 4 1/2" for 85 hp -steel 1941-1948= 16" x 4" steel 1948-1953 P/U =16" x 4 1/2 " and 15" x 5"
I am embarrased to say, do I have to?....O.K. FWIW It came out of an July 2005 article in "'Ol Skool Rodz" on different Old Wheels. It was written by Joe Smith from Early Ford and Hot Rod in Georgia. (800) 235-4013 Ya didn't think I knew that shit did ya!
EDIT: I'll take his word(look at previous post to see why), and what I know over "old school rods" anyday of the week. There are several infamous hotrod wheels left off that list(thank god or the prices would go even higher). Drew
It was just a basic list on stock sizes , bolt patterns and spacings. It said it was not all encompassing and that "There are some definite additions and exceptions to this list and some optional 15" and 16" and wider width wheels in certain years thatwere available." That's why I reposted that it could have been an option '40 60 hp wheel. When I was responding no one had responded, we were responding at the same time and ya'll beat me. I'll be the first to say I don't know shit...just trying to learn.
dont know on the 40 wheels but 1936 - 1939 wide 5's came in 3 1/2" & 4" widths so watch out when buying these. i see alot of each.
That Old Skool Rodz list is crap. In '40 there were the 3.5" on V8-60 cars and 4" on V8-85 cars. '41 through '48 were 4.5". I think the 16x5 wheels were Lincoln, but were also on many of the 50's ford pickup trucks.
At one time I had thought I seen an auction on Ebay with a tape measure held up measuring them at 3 1/2". Did anyone else see it?
I think they should name their magazine HOT RAT RODZ... or no, maybe Rat Rodding and Restyling... Anyway... I even had in my posession, up until a few months ago... a 5.5" x 16 Ford solid... Owld Skoo' Rodz didn't have that one on their list either. Sam.
As a side note... Spending $500 (and someone will) on 1/2"..... OF WHEEL WIDTH!!! Has to be the stupidest money spent in Hot Rodding. Think of all the crap you could spend $500 on that would make the car go faster or have a much more significant impact on it's appearance.
I picked up one 3 1/2" V8-60 wheel at a swap a couple years ago for $10, gave it to VAPHEAD so he could have a pair. When he sells them together for $500 I'm gunna get half and the name of the moron who bought them. I've got a whole load of other worthless junk to sell him. Once they're mounted on a car there 's no way to tell how wide they are. What a waste of money.
The 16" wheel was an option on P/Us all the way up to about 1960 with the 48 style hub cap. I saw a nice restoration that the original owner swore the rims were ordered that way. I never measured the width but it's very possible they could be 5.5.
Josh Mills actually wrote that article. Probably just a basic list of what came standard on those cars. I am sure Henry used plenty of whatever he had from year to year - so they could have come off anything.
Pretty sure this info came from a Ford parts book, via the HAMB a couple years ago. Format is Part number, Size, Year/Application . . . # 68 1015-A -- 16 x 4 -- 90 HP 36-39 Pass, Comm; 60 HP 37-39; 60HP station wagon 37-38. (these are all wide 5) #91D 1015 -- 16 x 5 -- 3/4 ton truck 39-47. #11A 1015 -- 16 x 4 -- Pass 40-48, Comm 40-42. #8C 1015 -- 16 x4.5 -- comm 45-47. #022A1015 -- 16x3-1/2 -- 1940 60 HP Pass. 19A 1015 -- 16 x 5 -- 1941 95HP Pass. (pretty sure this is Lincoln only) Might not be a complete list, but it covers the ones we care about. Right now I've got a pair of 3.5s, a pair of 4.0s, a pair of 4.5s, and a pair of 5.0s. 3.5s and 5.0s will go on the '32. The 3.5s DO look slightly different when they're on a car -- the "dome" of the center protrudes more. Also, the centers on all these appear to be the same, except the 5" -- it has a deeper "well" underneath the hubcap. Steve.
I guess I don't really know the difference... but were you talking about my first comment, or my second one? Sam.
I plan to have my 4.5's narrowed to 3.5 to get "the look". From what some older hotrodders tell me, the centers are the same ford just put different hoops around them, and this has shown true on every set I have seen. The cars that I have seen them on it's seem to narrow the front end up alot in apperance. Plus it allows you to run a narrower tire. I wouldn't mind getting a set of the real ones, but the prices are outta control right now. Drew
According to my 40 ford parts book the 3 1/2 was only used on the 40 V-8 60. Every 42-48 ford I ever parted and I have about 24 of them has had 16 x 4 1/2. 16x5 according to the ford parts books are used on 41 Merc and pickups to at least 56. Fordnutz.
Then maybe it´s time for some one to try to find an earlier catalog than this link: This Catalog is for 49-64, maybe there is a catalog for pre' 49 wheels ? http://www.tocmp.com/catalogs/MotorWheels1964/MotorWheelsCatalog19491964/index.html
