I purchased a 49 merc (4 door) a couple of weeks ago. I want to lower the car, I found Jamco which I have seen on some of the threads. He sells a lowering kit which included 3 inch lowering springs for the front and 4 inch lowering leaf spring for the back. Has anyone used this system for the 49 and can you let me know the goods and bads.
Sigg, please see these threads regarding your Merc: 1949 - 1951 Mercury Parts/ Reproduction Parts List http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=331564 CHEAP and Great Alternative Coil Springs '49 thru '59 Ford and Merc http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=260795 HAMB Merc Club http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=308494
You can also lower the front end by drilling out the rivets that mount the spring cup to the lower a arm and adding a 1 inch spacer and cutting the coils while you have them out. Did this on my 53 Merc and still rode nice.
we've done the drillin rivets out of the a arms and put 1.250 spacers several times on 49 mercs and did great without cutting springs
Which three leafs did you take out? The bottom three or every other one? I've got two out, I'd call em the second and fourth ones, and 3" blocks, but still want it a bit lower. And does the drive shaft hit the floor pan with three out and 4" blocks? I dont have a shaft yet to really get a good look. Thanks.
