We are the only HAMB members that we know of in this area. The White Mountains of AZ. The Willow fire is the second largest fire in AZ. It is covering about 300 thousand acres. We are safe as we are west of the fire but only by 60 miles, we were going to leave last week as the smoke was getting our health down. We only ask for your prayers as that is all that we can ask for as of now. I have supported the Joplin area and hope that they are getting back to normal. We have a lot of car people up here and hope they all are safe. I will keep this up to date. John
Yeah, that fire must be a bad one, I feel for anyone near it. I know quite a few rodder from down there, hope you and them make it alright. We are 2/300 miles away and we can't breathe the smoke from it has been so bad here for a week. Blood red sunsets, poor visability, you would think you were in LA in the 70's!
yeah thankfully the wind hasn't blown the smoke towards us as the fire is close as hell was working on my van all day outside today and that smoke in the distance is eery as all hell....
yeah we are fine, the wind has been blowing the fire away from us, even though it is close there isn't much smoke if any in town but that can change and I hope and pray that the wind doesn't change directions....
stay safe guys, dont let it get too close before gettin the hell outta there ! hope all ends well with you goat
we have az wildfires every year but i was watching the news tonight and they showed a pic from space where you could see the fire, holy ****! as of this afternoon it was 0% contained. all from some ***hat that wasnt smart enough to take care of a small outdoor fire. you guys close to the fire stay safe and keep us updated.
Last fall we spent some time in the area that is now burning. It was a beautiful place and we enjoyed the trip through the mountains. I am sorry for all the loss. Keep safe. John
Glad you posted this pic. This sign's only a couple miles from our property. Looks like I'll be able to come up there July 4th weekend.
I feel for you guys. I nearly lost everything in 2007 from a fire set by an arsonist ***hole in 2007. Came to within 15 feet of my barn housing my entire collection of rare cars and parts. Remember, your life is the single most valuable thing you have - get out when you are told to leave, no matter how hard it is. Nothing is worth your life. Stay safe guys and stay indoors when the smoke and ash blows your way.
yeah if they told me to evacuate, I would, yeah i love my toys, but there just things, replaceable things, and I woke up this morning to a big fog / haze.. the wind shifted, I think I'll stay inside today lol
Has it taken out Mt. Baldy and the Sunrise Ski resort? Hawley Lake? From the pictures I've gleened so far, it looks like Big Lake might have been taken. What about John Wayne's old ranch there? I wonder where the helicopters are dunking their Bambi buckets then... Spent many a day at the Safire there in Springerville. Most don't know of a lot of the history in that area. Did you know that the Conquistidors (sp) were in that area looking for Cibioa (sp) The city of Gold? There have been artifacts found in that area. Just south of Springerville, between Springerville and St. Johns, there are the remains of a old stone V that the Indians used to run buffalo off the cliff into the Little Colorado river. (Per Northern Arizona University when they were surveying, I flew them over so they could map it) The salvage yard on the east side of Springerville has a lot of good old cars in it. Also, east of Alpine on the road to Pie Town, New Mexico, used to be a lot of 30;s tin visable from the road. HellRaiser
I beilieve the salvage yard you refer to is owned by fellow H.A.M.B.er Applekrate... Could be wrong though.
Not sure what is going on today but the Show Low area is full of smoke, had to come back into the house???????
It was over 30 years ago now. I remember there was a shed sort of towards the back. There was a complete 46/7/or 48 all white in color Indian Chief motorcycle in it. Someone back when from Cali had broke down, and just left it. (I checked, no ***le) I'm sure it's been long gone. It's cloudy back here now in Nebraska, but the other night about a hour before sunset, I could see the smoke in the sky even back here. It was pretty well dispersed and up high, so there wasn't any smell. But I know it was the smoke from down there. (From being a tanker pilot with Evergreen many moons ago). In Springerville, is the old Ford garage still there? That used to be the oldest continuous Ford dealership in Arizona, and I "Think" if my memory is right, the oldest continuous one in the U.S..(Or it used to be at the time I used to hang around down there) In the dealership, there was an old gl*** display case with old pictures. I presume it was the original owner of that Ford dealership with Geronimo at the turn f the century. If there is still anyone still alive in the Springerville/Eager area that can tell you some history of the Clanton gang, and how bullet holes got in the old school house, worth a listen to...(For you Pilgrim types, Springerville is several days ride by horse, north of Tombstone. I used to live near Fort Apache, that area is beautiful. Very special place, when the old growth burns off it gets replaced by scrub and the old birches etc will never come backl. I remember white birch trees so big i couldn't get my arms around them! Very sad.
Ah, Ft Apache...White River.....On the south end of the runway, right at the edge of the White river, there was this sign...Woa you S.O.B, there ain't no more....or you'd go off the end into the river. .And the drive down to Hannegans Meadow... In the winter time, with the snow clinging to the branches!!! Yep, all of that area is a hot rodders dream drive. HellRaiser
Friday afternoon and the fire is still rageing! The wind has died down some (15-25 mph gusting) the fire crews are working thier azzes off to back fire and g ain some more containment, so far, in the Greer, Eager area they have lost 22 structures, and 6 more were damaged. all we can do is pray,,and hope He calms the winds.
