Need an assist from the sheetmetal gurus. The '39 Deluxe/'40 Ford Coupe vs. '39/40 Mercury Coupe sheetmetal, chrome and stainless. What is the same and what is unique to the brand? For instance, the front '39 grille. Same to both Ford and Merc or different? Any guidance you could provide is much appreciated. My eye just isn't that good. Might as well admit it. A couple '39/'40 Mercs locally for sale, but none complete. Gonna need to find fenders, doors, bumpers, door handles, etc. and it would be good to know what can be substituted between brands. The Fords around here are easy to find, but the Mercs are pretty rare. It has a bearing on whether to pursue the purchase or not. Thanks, guys.
40 Ford and 40 Merc shared the headlight assemblies and headlight "doors" (rings for the layman). Some mechanical parts like spindles and brakes, engine internal bits, and maybe some other small stuff. But basically, nothing interchanges. Especially sheetmetal.
Uuuuggghhhh. That's what I was afraid of. My guess is that the Merc sheetmetal is difficult to come by anywhere. Correct? Of course, I'm just finishing a '34 Pickup project, and steel rear fenders for that are world class $$$, so why not follow up with another wallet beater....
How about interchangability within the brand? Are the '39/'40 Merc Coupe sheetmetal pieces the same or different between the two years? Maybe between these various piles of metal there is enough for one good runner. It won't be a showcar, that's for sure.
Hoods are different in front.Rear fenders on 39s have smaller wheel openings than 40. 39-40 coupe doors are basically the same.
