I was a participant in this race in 1986,,was then owned by Interstate batteries..fron Disneyland to NY City,,ended in front of world trade center....Is a VERY costly event to participate in..I cannot emphisize the VERY COSTLY.part of this..Rules and regulations very strict also...Show your appreciation to the owners of these vehicles,That is the most that many owners will recieve for their efforts.
Talking with several people yesterday it sounds like a lot of people are having fuel problems. (lot's of ethanol in the gas down here) Hope they got all that worked out last night. Well, I'm on my way down now!
Oh yea, I'll be sure to get pictures of the chopped, dropped, twin supercharged and blown Peterbilt Semi! Oh yea!
The Great Race came through Lubbock twice while I was living there. Heres a pic of Corky, myself (center) and Cecil taken in 2007 and a link to an album with all the pics I took of the cars coming into town. http://s175.photobucket.com/albums/w127/mharbour/Great Race 2007/

Whew! Just got back from Vermont and I gotta say the Great Race was an awesome experience from a photographer's standpoint! I traveled the entire route, and saw these cars on some of the coolest backroads in the country! Covered bridges, windy mountain roads and farmland made for awesome backdrops. Check out my pictures at www.greatrace.com or http://blog.cokertire.com. When I get back to work tomorrow, I'll post up some of my favorites on here.
Oh and by the way, the oldest car in the event won it all! It was Howard and Douglas Sharp in a 1911 Velie Racetype....a 100 year old car! It was insane.
The boys in the blue Model A finished third in the Sportsman Rookie cl*** if I remember correctly. Driver was 16 and navigator was 15...those dudes were extremely cool and did a great job all week!
If you have Facebook, watch this video....all of this video was taken on this year's Great Race, and edited in time for the Awards Banquet, just hours after the finish. Coker Tire's video guy Jason is a ninja...this video is freakin' amazing. Turn up the volume! https://www.facebook.com/#!/video/video.php?v=2096081371314
