'63 Impala Dash Removal

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by CJHacker, Nov 14, 2003.

  1. Hey everybody,

Been a while since I've posted, but I've got a question. Snow has already blanketed a layer on the ground here, and I need to pull a dash out of a '63 for my project. Does anyone have any experience removing these? Are they bolted in or welded in? Anyone have a blow-up diagram of it?

Figured I'd see if anyone knew before I go lay in the snow for a day tryin' ta figure it out.

Mornin' Buddy! The instrument cluster/speedometer is screwed or bolted in the dash, but the dash itself is welded in. (The snow will help as a fire retardent if you have to cut it out.) Depending on how much you are going to save- you could could cut the whole cowl off the car and remove it later at home in the workshop. In any case you need to remove the steering column, speedo-cluster, glovebox, heater and controls, pedal assembly, bracing rods, radio/speaker, firewall pad/insulation, wiring harness, windshield, and whatever else is in the way to cut out the dash panel. The weather is supposed to be nice this weekend, though. overspray

I'd be interested in the answer or diagrams for this question as well. I need to remove the dash in my '64 Impala before I can weld in the new floor panels. We don't have snow here yet, so I may just dive in and find out on my own.

I'm guessing it's all steel.None of that OEM padded vinyl crap like on the later cars.
If the windshield is out,how about slicing it out with a Plasma cutter?

hey man, just noticed you on here. i'm from zanesville, had a 64 SS for a couple of years now. needless to say, it is too far gone to mess with right now, so i'm learning on a 50 pontiac that's in better shape. whats yer plans for your impala?is it a standard impala or an SS? engine, tranny?

Josh, I don't know if this is directed at CJ or me, so I will reply anyway. I believe we met at Skipstitch's KKOA Cookout earlier this year. There were a whole lot of conversations that night. I guess I didn't realize you had a '64 too. Isn't Ohio rust great? Maybe you have more rust... I don't know. Any pics? My goal is to get the car back to a point where I can shut the doors and rust doesn't fall to the ground. My Impala is a SS with a 327 / 300hp with a Muncie M21 4spd. In its' original condition it was a rare car. Originally it was ordered by a little old lady who ordered the car with the SS package and a 283 with 3 on the tree. At least this is the story that has been passed down through the owners. It has been my hot rod since 1972. It was put in storage in 1978, which was not good for it at all. The car will not be restored to original. Plans are to install a suspension system from Air Ride Technologies, 4 wheel disc brakes, 2" dropped front spindles, rebuild the engine and trans, have Skipstitch install an interior, and paint the exterior pale yellow on the sides and dark blue on all the top panels (hood, top and trunk). If you haven't seen photos yet, I uploaded them to a website. The website is http://bsac.topcities.com/1964chevy/main.htm. Look under the progress dates on the left side of the webpage.

  8. Yeah, I'm plannin' on usin' this dash in my T coupe....guess we'll see if I can get it out in time to get some stuff done on it.

Thanks for the suggestions. I might end up having to smash out the windshield (hate to, not a chip in it), and take the cut off wheel to it er somethin'.

When you say "restored to original" do you mean as an SS-327 clone with the 4-speed or with a column-shift 3-speed and a 283?

I don't know if I'd call it a clone or not, but yes it will get a rebuilt 327 with the 4-speed.
