So I found this photo that George took P.O.P.Teenage Fair in 1962 held in Santa Monica California.. The 30 Roadster has been one of my favorite
cars and a big inspiration for my roadster build some day.. but when I looked close at the photo it looks like you could win the car in a raffle..
I don't who won this or if it was just a ploy to get raffle tickets sold but boy it would be cool to win this one.. Can any one shed some light on this????

I know the original builder was looking for it, has it ever turned up? Not bad for an EAST COAST build, is it?

Roadster is super nice but the 5w with the side mount antenna and white walls turns my crank.

Been an all time favorite of mine since I first saw it at a show in Hartford CT in the late '50s.

Wherever it is today, it's really neat.

I wouldn't say this about every car from this period, but I love all the chrome and the whitewalls.

    It just fits perfectly.

    Stance is great too.

Bill Neumann = Neuspeed for the younger (tuner) guys.
He's still making "Hot Rod" parts for the "tuner" cars!

  10. He was still looking for it a while back and I think it was supposedly in New Mexico.

Just looking at a 1960 Hot Rod Magazine yesterday and saw this car in it. Here are a couple of pics.

Wow, never knew that! Interesting stuff, be interesting to find out more about the giveaway. Car is an icon, I have been in lust with it since I picked up the Car Craft that had the feature on it when I was 12. The Golden Rod was in the same issue. Couple of CL***IC channeled roadsters.

Yes,---I can shed some "light" on this, after checking all my old LAR rosters back to 1957, Bill Neumann was never a member of LAR. The first pix showing LAR club jacket & LAR banner & the give away roadster is probably the time the LAR club was on a membership drive at Santa Monica show.
During the 70's the LAR club banner was stolen at a NSRA event & never recovered.

Very interesting.... Don. bummer about the banner tho.. :( so were they actually giving the car away? or since they were doing the membership drive it was to attract attention
    to the booth?

Flat firewall were very common back then when doing an engine swap. It was the fastest and easiest way to gain clearence and many of us liked the smooth look (and you all thought "Smooth" was invented by Boyd:D )

That is a sharp car. I have a magazine (Speed something?) at home that has the build of the car. I'll have to scan it sometime.

    I sent an email to Bill and this was his great responce;

    Hi, Don
That’s my roadster, and I think I was a member for a year or two, I know I went to several of their shows. I can read “will be given away,” but can’t make out the first or other words at the end – but it wasn’t given away here or any other time. Maybe the original photo by GB would show more of what the sign says. And I don’t remember the person sitting on the stool.

I sold the roadster in about 1966-67 intending to build a new one, but got sidetracked with my new business until about six years ago when I finally started on a new one and have been driving for about three years now. I also just finished building a ’32 five window coupe and hope to have it at its first show this summer.

Thanks for sending the photo and thinking of me.
    Regards
    Bill Neumann

Since I wasn't a member, I had to go through all the signing up and then trying to figure out how to get back to the question and provide an answer. Hopefully, I got to the right place.

Being one of the first members of the L.A. Roadster Club, I know exactly what happened to the raffle of Bill's roadster. The Club made an agree- ment with Bill to purchase the roadster for a certain amount with the idea of raffleing it off at the L. A. Roadster Show, then being held on the Hollywood Bowl parking lot. The raffle tickets were sold for a dollar each. Sales did not meet our expectations and therefore we could not purchase the car, so Bill withdrew it from sale and the car stayed in Bill's possession. The Roadster Club then spent a few nights writing $1.00 checks and returning all the raffle money to the contributors. I think maybe Bill returned to the east coast taking the roadster with him.

Being slow learners, we did try a raffle again, but this time we were successful purchasing Paul Chamberlain's '29 roadster which was awarded to a young lady, if my memory serves me correctly.

    Welcome Mr. Scritchfield.

Have viewed your roadster at "The Roadster Show" many times. I also followed some of the articles that featured "The Scritch-Car" in R&C back in the day (Tri-Y headers, Bonneville...). Like others here I look forward to some stories of the early L.A. Roadsters.

No, Cecil---- I didn't become an LAR member until 1971, Tom didn't re apply for membership again until the late 70's---So that means Hal Baylor & Tom were buddies(?) in the 60's when Tom was racing all comers!-----------Don

Damn great thread, beautiful roadster and a great history lesson. I think the kid in the pic may need a little fiber in his diet, tho............
