Picked this up as a daily driver the other day! 1962 Ford Falcon sought after Detroit build code, by no means a Hot-rod... but a sweet daily cruiser. it picked it up cheap because it wasn't running. got it fired up and driving in 10 min, it has a rough idle, the I think the carb may need rebuilt/replaced, the plugs were Gnarly so i cleaned them up, it helped smooth out the idle a bit and has all new ignition stuff including a new coil and distributor/wires new fuel pump and the compression is really good. its a 170 inline 6 with 2 speed auto trans. any ideas what else i might be able to do to get this thing running smooth? new/rebuild carb? maybe timing??
Clean out the fuel tank and change the fuel filters first. Points and condenser, cap and rotor next. That all together will set you back less than 50 bucks. Also new plugs are cheap as are wires. Alot of times those old carbs just need a good cleaning more than a rebuild.
thanks guys! it has all new pionts/condenser new wires/ new distributor. I'm working on getting all the old fuel out and its gotten a bit better. it just has a problem now where when i put my foot down on the accelerator it trys to stall out, then I let my foot off and gently press down on the gas pedal and it takes off. =( but it runs strong at 15+mph. it sat for two years so i hope its just old fuel =)
My old man had a 64 Comet with 200-6 and 2-sp auto that he bought new. The end cylinders get burned exhaust valves by about 75k miles, from running lean. Compression test will tell. They also use a Load-A-Matic type dizzy, make sure the advance is working. The accelerator pumps seemed to be the first thing in the carb to go.
the compression checked out good, I did find a small leak in the carb that i didnt see before. i'm taking the carb in tomorrow to have it rebuilt to spec. it seems to be smoothing out the more that old gas burns up, just took it for another spin around the block and it seemed to be pretty smooth. other than it bogging down when you first step on the accelerator and then leveling out, I think thats due to a vacuum leak or something I did adjusting the carb. I'm new to the manual choke thing so I also may not have the choke adjusted right while driving.
i'll send you a good lever if you can't find one. let me know. new collars are available fairly cheap.
Is the engine warmed right up when it is bogging down? If it is warm the choke should be right off when you are driving, as is not on at all.
Check the vacuum advance (**** and see if it moves) I had a Falcon that ran rough at idle and that was the problem.
sounds like vacuum advance to me. if you need pics of it let me know i took my distributor apart to polish it up some and took pics. pm me your email and i can send pics. i also have a shift lever for it too.
carb rebuild and like has been said check vac advance.if the cute girl came with it you got a screamin deal!!
Cool car. I hadn't realized there were Detroit-built Falcons (I ***ume that means Rouge-built). Mine was built in Lorain, OH. -Dave
The bogging down is usually the carb's accellerator pump.....you can test this by removing the air cleaner ***y. Look down into the carbs throat (with the choke open of course). Manually move the throttle linkage as if to give it a full open throttle. You should see a squirty of gas being shot down into the carb venturi by a small orifice near the top opening in the carb. No gas.....accellerator pump is shot and the carb needs to be rebuilt. The acc pump is part of every carb kit and easy to replace. If you do see a nice squirt of gas, chances are the vacuum advance is no good (pin holes or cracks in the rubber diaphragm). Simply replace the vac advance. We have these in stock. There can be other possibilities but these are the most likely culprits.....especially on an old car that has been sitting a long time.
Just got me one the same year for the same reason daily driver. Rebuild the carb do the points and check the gaps on your pugs. Nice ride man.
i should be getting the carb back tomorrow, had it sent out and rebuilt and bench tested, didnt want to take any chances haha. i'm definatly going to change the spark plugs the old ones are pretty bad!
I dint know either, i'm going off what the guy that had it before me said. i want to look into it more to make sure it actually is haha!
I actually might be interested in that, i might already have one tho. i got a big box of extra parts for it that i have not looked through yet, =)
Haha! No way! I've been having a blast with it. I wanna drive it while I finish my push truck and maybe turn it into a g***er. I waited nearly two months to get it! I Guess if the price was right I might. But after all I've only had it for less than a week now haha!
http://cl***icinlines.com/proddetail.asp?prod=FSP-200-HCA Get the red one, it will be silver as they don't make anodized anymore. change over to a Holley 350cfm. I did it for under $200. I bought the carb off ebay from Holley. They sell them cheap because they can't sell them as new even though they are. Why? because it was returned as defective when in fact someone just didn't adjust it correctley, so they take them and rebuild them and sell cheap. Also schange over to a Duraspark II distributor and get an ignition module... cheap also.
Blades - That looks like a cool upgrade. Might have to try it out on my son's: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=594290
Thanks blades! It actually already has a ignition module. The guy before me did it. It sounds pretty good now that the carb is redone. The "Bogging" issue stoped after the carb was rebuilt. Still needs a idle adjustment. Anyone know what the resting idle rpm is? It seems a tad too high just sitting at a stop.
