U joint adapters, ford to chevy

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by rodwerkz, Apr 26, 2005.

  1. I'm going to the driveline place to have my driveshaft shortened tomorrow. I also need to get the rear end u-joint changed so it will work with my 8" rear. I thought that this would usually involve swaping the rear yoke for a ford item but then I found these:
    http://www.speedwaymotors.com/xq/asp/strBase_List./hilt./source.2192/base_no.91048315/str_base_no.91048312%2C91048315%2C9191105%2C/header_***le.Street+Rod+Products%2DU+Joints/page_name.prod%5Flist%5Fdisplay%2Easp/search_type.L2%7E445/search_option./deptsearch./deptSearch_id.225/dept_id.L2%7E445/dept_id_p.225/dept_name./dept_name_p.Street+Rod+Products/ShowImages.yes/sq.0/cont.1/intPgNo.1/redirect./qx/product.htm

The only thing is I think these are for an 9" because the seat on my rear ends yoke are only about 3" wide. Do they make adapters for 8" swaps?? Am I measuring wrong?? The rear is from a 66 mustang.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.. Otherwise I guess I'll find out tomorrow (I'd rather go there knowing what i"m talking about)

Measure the width of your pinion yoke saddle. From that, the driveline guy will get you the right adapter joint. Chevvie to Ford 8 and 9 inch rear conversion joints are VERY common and the driveline place will have them in stock.

You can usually even get them at your local Auto-Zone.

    Good luck, -Abone.

  5. thanks for the advice... I was looking at ford yoke components and they look to be over 100 bucks plus whatever the driveline place would charge.. The ujoint would definitely be better...

  6. your 8" ford rear probabilliy uses an u-joint that has 1-1/16" caps and 3-7/32" across...i have used napa part # 372 several times to put a chevy driveshaft on to a 8" rear , but it depends on what driveshaft you are using....the driveshaft shop should be able to come up with the right combination u-joint
