So out of the two shocks one seems to work just fine and I can hear the fluid moving as the arm is moved. The other is not so lucky... The bottom of the cover plate was somehow bent open and all the fluid was gone and the thing a rusty mess inside. I want to know what I need and can do to get this thing working. Never having opened one I don't really know what I am looking for. There is a cam inside that moves with the arms though the top part hits against a metal disc which an old MoToRs manual says is the cam button but I don't see one on the lower side. Also this side has less upward travel than the other. Is there another "cam button" hidden amongst the rust underneath the bottom side of the cam? Will sand blasting and cleaning out this thing then filling with fluid be enough to have a functioning shock absorber? I really don't have the money for the replacements (225 bucks a piece @ Chevsot40s)
Hey '48. Usually unless the seals are toast, these can be brought back to life with just some hydraulic jack oil or motocycle fork oil. I would think a cleaning and refill of yours may work. This link has a few links to parts sources for seals, etc. for rebuilding them. Sorry I don't have more...but hope this helps a little. http://vcca.org/forum/ubbthreads.ph...ion/Search/true/knee_action_shocks#Post208596 http://gmhistory.chevytalk.org/kneeaction2.htm
the arms slide a bit and jiggle. Does this mean the seals through the shaft are shot? Is it possible to remove the axle that runs arm to arm through the shock? Also, does anyone know where to get those seals for a '48? It seems the material above is for an earlier type of "knee action"
if they can't be moved by hand , i was told by apple hydraulics that 10:1 they will prob break the rod and they are pretty much junk. i spent the $500 on rebuilt ones. if someone needs one i have one that i bought from a guy on the hamb that supposidely works. it moves by hand. pm me if interested.
Those were so expensive to mess with I ditched mine for modern tube shocks. It rides like a dream now!
I would still love to see someone do the job... I guess -> that the welding between the fork-arms must be cut to move them out of the body!? The you can start replacing bearings/seals in the main body. This pic is from last week, when I start putting everything back together... I see that one is leaking around the back-cover plate. So I ordered leafs of sealing material to cut a new sealing for them. I will take a look inside an make pictures! (I also installing normal shocks!) Maybe that link here shows that my idea could work?! https://mgaguru.com/mgtech/suspensn/fs207.htm
