I'm still a newbie, so I can admit I still like the looks of my new Ansen Sprints on my old Nash... but the last car show I went to, bumped me to street rod, soley because of the aluminum wheels... I don't really want to run the stock wheels & hubcaps... if I don't blow my wad at Christmas time, maybe I can come up with something else... my 1st thought is something like this... http://www.mcleanwheels.com/30spoke.html or... http://www.mcleanwheels.com/52spoke.html BTW... I personally like the 50 spoke better... but if you guys would be so kind as to offer suggestions & or pics... that would be great... thanks
Please don't take this the wrong way but if you're building your car to fit some show's criteria, I think you're kinda missing the point. (Unless, of course, trophies ARE the whole point. If so, feel free to ignore me.) If the Ansen's make you happy then that is what you should be running. Wire wheels are cool, but to me they scream resto-rod. So, do I have any suggestions? NOT billet! But, what do I know? I'm building a custom with steelies and wheel covers.
im not a big wire wheel guy either screams pimp mobile to me run what you like dont ever try to please anyone but yourself (it just cant be done) if it were mine id run painted steelies and caps/rings or chrome reverse for sum bling
it's kinda funny... 2 shows ago, I was sitting next to a 32 Ford that "others" told me the guy spent over $160,000.00 on... mine... a street rod ??? original flathead six, original 3 speed... I do have custom bumpers, but they look period... I told the guys next to me last show... that I definately have the slowest car in the street rod cl*** ( I don't even have an over drive or 2 speed axel... the car drives out comfortable at about 50 mph ) I guess I'm just looking for ideas... besides as an ex Jeeper & ATV racer it's not unusual for me to swap tires & wheels 3-4 times a day to run different cl***es... so even if I was totally sold on the slots... I suppose I could swap a set of tires to run the stock cl*** if needed
build it how you want, just dont ever throw billets on it. Its your ride not mine. cant go wrong with steelies with spider caps.
The 52 spoke looks sweet. Personally I wouldn't use the knockoffs. They just scream fake when everyone can see it has 5 lugnuts holding the wheel on.
Radir's are aluminum, but if someone tried to call your car a street rod for running them, they might need their head checked. Know what I mean? Personally, I'd do a set of gloss black or body color steelies, trim rings and spider caps on it.
LOL I never noticed that you were an FNG I thought that you had been around forever. Maybe I should pay more attention. If they bumped you to street rod cl*** because you had Ansen Sprints it is because they are uneducated. Maybe that is a little harsh, it is because they don't know that Ansen Sprints have been around a long time. maybe the repops haven't but the originals have been. Lots of folks think that a slot mag is a '70s wheel because they were popular with the Van Crowd but they were around way before the "Street Rod" movement. I suppose that if you had Crietz modulars they would have put you in Pro Street cl***. Crietz was building a 3 piece wheel in the late '50s. They were also aluminum. That said other than a performance oriented car I think that chrome reverse wheels are cool or Old Americans or ??? I'll take a look at the wires but if you want to go traditional you want Skylark or Chrysler or Thunderbird or Kelsey Hayes as a rule. OK those work, I like the 30 spoke without the spinners best. But it is all just personal taste I guess.
I'm definately more of a cruise type guy... I just have a cracked water pump nose & a couple of brake issues I'm still trying to iron out... so the car likes to sit in parking lots more than cruise... at least until those issues are taken care of as far as the shows... I've always been highly compe***ive ( someone even talked me into a chairitable "dancing with the stars" because it was for a good cause... & it was a compe***ion ( BTW... I was the stock cl*** national mud race champion for ATV's in 2005... I'm not the type of guy to don a suit & dance shoes ) but I would buy a nice looking set of wheels to throw on if I'm doing a show in the future... & until I decide what to do about paint... the only chance I have of doing well ( compe***ively ) is in stock cl***... ... I'm not totally shallow though... I've really enjoyed looking at all the other cars, & talking to the owners while at the shows...
I'm usually packing it up when they're giving out the trophies. I genuinely have zero interest in them. A compliment from an old-timer means more to me than a plastic dust collector.
Hell I don't have to go to shows to be judged, I come on here for that. I actually won something at a show once, pretty funny actually. I was shooting show coverage for a magazine I used to work for and parked to close I guess.
