I knew a girl once with a flathead.....a great place to rest my beer.

    sorry about that!

A farmer has a 49 Ford pickup with a flathead for sale. The engine turns over but I'm not interested in that. I want body parts. The truck is junk except for a couple doors and the hood and grille. I know what the parts are worth but whats the motor worth?? $100.00??

100-200 dollars is what I'd pay for a block that hasn't been magnafluxed but looks good. It's hard to say. The first flattie I bought ran like a champ smoked a little, had alot of the original paint on it, seemed to be in good shape. When I started to dis***emble it I found that one deck had been sleeved in all four cylinders. When I got the sleeves out (some real thick ones that I think were generally reserved for tractors) I found that one of the cylinders had a crack and hole in it and another for lack of a better word was "shattered". I could stick 3 fingers through the wall.
IMHO they are risky, I would never buy any to resell and try to make money on it, but then again I would feel real bad if I found that somebody gave me even a little hard earned cash only to find that the motor is no good.

Michael M, Why would you remove sleeves that are already installed? the idea behind a sleeve is to restore the bore so it can be used for the life of the block. They aren't something that gets replaced with every overhaul.

To sell one in this condition, that is unknown but turns, pull heads, manifolds, and pan. Wirebrush areas between bores and valves, turn it over a few times with light oil in bores to clean them up a little, and spray some solvent around lower waterjacket areas and areas where main webs connect to them.
Anyone willing to risk more than s**** value will want to check those valve areas for cracks and the lower jackets/main areas for freezing damage. Drop a ruler into a cylinder and measure stroke--if 3 3/4 no points, if 4" your value just rose by several hundred bucks. If trans is 3 speed, that may be worth a few bucks too.

  9. If it had a 4" crank I'd give your asking price and wouldn't care about thr rest of it. I've seen 4" cranks go for as high as 700.00. But I think that the going price on 'em right now is about 300.00.

Uh, I hope I didn't just ruin someones day.

If you want to know thw worth of parts'npieces, best thing you can do is watch the cl***ifieds.

One of those babies was loose as hell so my curiousity got the best of me. Plus I really didn't like the idea of having a sleeved engine when I was going to drop so much money into it. I know, I know it sounds **** but I get really picky when it comes to this kind of **** I gotta have everything just right. Block works well for a mockup anyway so I guess it still has some life in it.
