I'm interested in running an alternator in my 64 Gal with 390fe. Anyone have pictures of their set-up? Thanks.
if your not in a big hurry for pics i'm putting together a 390 for a a 66 galaxie this weekend, its got a low mount altenator setup. let me know if you want some pics while its on the stand
Here is the setup I am running on the 58 TBird. Not the best photo, but really the only one that shows it. Try to ignore the skinny armed dude in the way...... I got the bracket from a company called C.R.A.P. The motor is a 390 that was replacing a 352 that had a generator on it.
Here's one that uses the common GM style-they're cheap, and put out a lot more amps than the older style Ford alt such as on my 63 Thunderbird:http://www.rowand.net/Shop/Tech/GMAlternatorInAFord.htm If you want it all Ford:http://www.galaxieclub.com/alternator-conversion.html Somewhere (lost it on h/d crash) I found a conversion using a later model Taurus alt, as I remember, the install didn't look too bad, just not sure how spendy those alts are. Hope it helps you! Jim
my 66 tbird witha 428 fe runs a alternator stock. are we over thinking this set up. im betting it will fit in the same hole the generator left
Go over to the Galaxie Pages at the Ford Muscle Forum. Invaluable place for Galaxie info if your not a member already: http://www.fordmuscleforums.com/galaxie-pages/ I was looking at alternator threads a few weeks back and saw a lot of postings about people using a one wire alternator and the Taurus alternator. My engine is from a 66' 390 with an alternator. I just put in a cheap Advance Auto Motorcraft 65 amp rebuilt alternator to replace the old one that died. I don't know much about converting from gen. to alt, because mine was already converted when I got the car (not even sure if 66 model fords came with a generator or not?). But I do know that the alternator is super easy to install. There is just a single bolt with the spacer that screws into the block and a curved bracket that the top bolt attaches to for tension. Easiest alt I ever installed.
Search FE alternator. Tons of thread on here including this one with a happy ending: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=465306&highlight=fe+alternator
URL Referral From Post # 6 - This is the LO-MOUNT method used on early FE blocks. Not all blocks had the tapped mounting hole at 5 on the ILL. C.R.A.P. makes an adapter to use this original mounting system without having to drill and tap- CRITES has the original brakets. The 3G ALT conversion (GOOGLE) is easily done and will give 100+ AMPS.
