looking for a 6v battery for my f1.... what part number/model number anybody? and any suggestions to test the starter? nobody can do it...
Any of your local auto parts stores should be able to test a starter. If not, look in the yellow pages for a Automotive Electric Shop/Rebuilder. There they can test it and of course will be able to rebuild it for you if needed. Do you have the dimensions of the old battery or the battery box? With that info someone at Napa should be able to help. Some of the other members might have the actual part number for you. Good luck, TR
You are testing my memory but I believe that Exide has a 6 volt battery part number com1p or a com2p. Stop at a parts store and look in the back of their battery book. It will give you the specs on all battery types and sizes. That will give you some clue to the type you need.
Back in the 6v days we always checked the amps load while it was cranking the engine. There used to be a simple gauge that you just lay across the starter heavy cable, maybe you can find a cheap one. Can't do that? then pull the starter apart to check for slop in the bushings, polish the commutator, check the amount of brushes it has. Brushes need replacing when they wear down enough to where the keeper springs will bottom out on the brush holders. Also look for signs that the fat part of the armature was rubbing on the field coils.
thanks for the suggestions guys, wound up just touching the starter with jumper cables off of a 12v battery for a second, works fine. another gearhead buddy of mine told me it wouldnt hurt it. also took it apart and cleaned everything. as for the battery, i said to hell with it! im doing a 12v conversion lol... ill fill you in on how that goes.
