Hey guys i think i have something going south on my rearend. I have a 65? mustang rearend under my 49 plymouth. Not sure if i need to replace bearings or what

Problem. Car "feels" not sounds like a dry bearing on the rearend. Not sure how to describ it but you know what i mean.

Any ideas??? Pull the axles and replace? I just replaced U joints last fall. O yea i am running bias plys too.

    Thanks

well the wife says that it's not for everyone!! seriously i would pull it now rather than wait for a bearing to lock and cause more damage or even accident.

It's about the only part of the car i haven't replaced.

Axle bearings? Not sure how. Just pull the wheel, drum, take out the bolts and pull the axle??? Is there a bearing in the center section that could be bad too or instead of??

    Thanks

is this your first ride on bias? are tire pressures right, front and rear? i've only had one axle bearing issue and that sucker siezed solid at about 15 mph. it didn't make any noticable noise either. straight pipes on an ot diesel. sorry i can't be of more help, but the other hambers will give more clues. good luck.

pull the wheels and drums..see if theres alot of play in the axle..as in see if it will move around in the housing, should have a little in and out, but not much up and down,,,
do the same with the pinion,up and down ,in and out movement.
if everything looks good id pull the 3rd member and start checking bearings....

Naw I've had the car for awhile now and have drove a few thousand miles on bias. Almost "feels" like the tires are out of balance or bout worn out.... only little different. I have driven it this way some last fall and 2 or 300 miles this year. Could be tires but doesnt feel the same?

    Hope this is making sense.

What Bulletproof1 suggested is a good place to start. We had a 61 Ford rear axle have an axle-bearing freeze once, thankfully it wasn't moving, but it happens. Best to at least pull the wheels and drums and check it out for play and obvious noise. Also, make sure diff fluid isn't leaking out anywhere, could be a sign that it's low if you have a leak for years...

Is it bagged or modified in any way? I have found that if you do not straighten rear end housings after welding on them the results can be premature axle bearing wear.

You know, I was kinda apprehensive about clicking on this thread...I'm not up for feeling of my buddy's rearend, I don't care how much he asks me to check it out...

Another thing to remember about the 8/9" rearends is if the axle bearing starts going bad, it can spit the axle out while your driving...always a good idea to really check them out when you have them out for anything or at least when you have the drums off check the axle for any up and down play...

I hope your rearend start to feel better soon...

Put the car on a frame lift and have someone put it in gear. Be careful but use a mechanics stethoscope to determine what bearing is making the noise....wheel bearing left or right, pinion bearing etc. Bearing noise can be hard to locate without this cheap tool. Great for alternator and water pump noises too.

Don't rule out U joints, new ones can go out I've seen coworkers mess them up plenty, but tommy's advice is spot on.

Or set some solid stands under the rear axle and do the same thing. A 10.00 or so mechanics stethoscope from O'Reilly's or Autozone or Sears is one tool everyone needs in his tool box.

As Tommy said it should help you pinpoint the cause of the noise.

Also don't rule out a separation or broken belt in one of the tires. While you have it jacked up or on a lift check the tires over.

From funny rearends to axle shafts with starters. I've had a funny rearend, but I've never seen a starter on an axle shaft. Weird.

Well i ordered new bearings and seals. I have had the car for a while an have never checked or changed them so its probably time. Plus the rear end is from the mid 60's so who knows if they have ever been changed.

  26. You may have over tightened the ujoint ubolts and that will kill the bearings in the ujoint.

pulled the axles and one bearing was going bad and the other getting close. Will replace but doubt that was what i was feeling since they weren't that bad.

    Thanks
